Chris Potter says he was never given a reason for being replaced as Gambit in X-Men ’97. The actor returned to the revived animated series in a different role, voicing Cable while A.J. LoCascio took over as the famous Cajun mutant.

From Gambit to Cable
When X-Men ’97 arrived in 2024, it continued the story of X-Men: The Animated Series and brought back many of the original performers. Potter was among the returning cast, but not in the part he had established during the 1990s run.
Potter originally voiced Gambit across 75 episodes. For the revival, he moved to Cable, leaving LoCascio to perform Gambit. Potter says the change was never explained to him, either before the recast or afterwards.
“I’ve never gotten an answer. Not from a single person. I really don’t know.”

A different perspective on the returning series
Potter says the key difference between working on the original series and its modern continuation is how clearly the cast understands the audience’s attachment to the show.
During the first series, he was also working on other projects, including the Kung Fu television series with David Carradine. He described the animated work at the time as something of a side project, carried out before the cast could fully appreciate the impression it would leave on viewers.
Three decades later, Potter is aware of the show’s lasting popularity and says it is exciting to be involved again. The revival’s ongoing success has also made the return feel more significant than the original production did at the time.
“In my mind, I’ll always be Gambit”
Although Potter is enjoying Cable, Gambit remains the role he feels most closely connected to. He was the first actor to voice the character in the series and had the chance to help shape its personality and performance.

Potter explained that Cable is different because he is joining a role already performed by other actors. Gambit, by contrast, was a character he helped create for the animated series, making the part especially personal.
“I did 75 episodes of Gambit. So in my mind, I’ll always be Gambit.”
He added that taking on Cable is still a welcome opportunity, calling the character another great role and saying that returning to the production remains as exciting as ever.
No explanation for the casting decision
Potter does not believe age was the reason for Gambit’s recasting. He noted that almost everyone from the original cast is older than he is, with Jubilee the stated exception.
Rather than speculate about the decision, Potter says he is simply pleased to be part of the new series. His comments leave the reason for the casting change unresolved, even as he continues to contribute to the show as Cable.
