Rumours claiming Bungie could combine Marathon and Destiny into one shared universe have been rejected by the studio. The speculation spread while Destiny 2 has no new content announced and Marathon is undergoing a significant change in direction.
The discussion began with a rumour sourced from 4chan, which circulated among the Marathon community. Its many claims included the suggestion that Destiny 3 is not being developed and that Bungie might merge the two science-fiction properties into a single intellectual property.
The alleged leak proposed that Marathon could represent humanity’s Golden Age, while also setting up future threats for a later Destiny project. Although the idea appealed to some lore-focused fans, Bungie creative director Julia Nardin quickly dismissed it.
Having worked on both series, Nardin shared on X that the claim was false. She said the games have plenty of Bungie’s creative DNA in common, but remain separate entities, comparing them to siblings and warning fans not to believe everything posted online.
Why the proposed crossover raised lore problems
Before Bungie responded, several Destiny 2 specialists had already questioned whether the theory fitted either game’s established history. My Name Is Byf wrote that Destiny’s Golden Age was associated with abundance, while Marathon’s history centres on scarcity and famine. He described a merger as a poor idea.
He also highlighted the absence of the Traveller from Marathon’s lore. Bringing such a major Destiny element into the other universe would create an obvious unresolved issue.
For readers following the wider arcade and gaming news landscape, this is a useful reminder that online leaks can gain momentum well before developers confirm or deny them. Fans can also explore RETROCADE’s arcade machines and shooting-game hardware while keeping up with new releases.
Why fans wanted the rumour to be true
The appeal is understandable. Destiny has more than a decade of storytelling behind it, spanning centuries of fictional history, numerous worlds and several ancient alien species.
With no new Destiny 2 content coming and no current plans for a spin-off or sequel, some players are struggling with the series’ uncertain future. One fan wrote in response to Nardin: “We just want Destiny back.”
For now, Bungie’s position is clear: despite their shared creative heritage, Marathon and Destiny are not being merged into one universe.
