DC Studios’ planned Booster Gold television series appears to have hit a major setback, with writer David Jenkins indicating that his version will not continue.
James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled the DC Universe in 2023 under the banner Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The ambitious slate included films and television projects such as Superman, the upcoming HBO series Lanterns, and a show centred on the time-travelling hero Booster Gold.
Jenkins shared the update on Threads, writing that his Booster Gold “won’t be moving forward”. He announced his involvement in 2025, explaining that he had inherited the project from Danny McBride. Jenkins previously created Our Flag Means Death for HBO and People of Earth for TBS.
“My Booster Gold won’t be moving forward.”
Jenkins’ post appears to have been prompted by recent remarks from Mahershala Ali about Marvel’s long-delayed Blade film. In an interview with GQ, Ali said he had moved on from the project and would not be involved if the film eventually went ahead. He noted that Marvel had the resources to make it, adding that the fact it had not happened meant they were no longer making it together.
It remains uncertain whether DC Studios could develop a different version of Booster Gold without Jenkins, or whether the proposed series has been abandoned altogether.
Who is Booster Gold?
Michael Jon Carter first appeared in 1986’s Booster Gold #1, created by writer-artist Dan Jurgens. Carter is a former football star from the 25th century who travels to the present-day DC Universe with his robotic companion, Skeets.
Armed with knowledge of history and advanced technology, Carter uses his unusual advantage to pursue wealth and fame. He adopts the superhero identity Booster Gold, a nickname attributed to former US President Ronald Reagan. In DC Comics, he has been associated with both the Justice League International and the Justice Society of America, and is frequently partnered with Blue Beetle.
The apparent loss of Booster Gold is another sign that Gunn and Safran’s original DCU plans have changed. The studio has released projects including Superman, Supergirl and Creature Commandos, while The Authority, Waller and Paradise Lost no longer appear to be progressing in the same way. Swamp Thing and The Brave and the Bold remain among the announced projects still awaited.
Upcoming DC projects include Lanterns in August, Clayface in October and the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow in July 2027. A series focused on Jimmy Olsen and Gorilla Grodd is also in development.
