Betsy Braddock finally gets a clearer identity
Betsy Braddock has accumulated one of the most complicated histories in X-Men comics since first appearing in Captain Britain almost 50 years ago. She is best known as Psylocke, although that name now primarily belongs to another character.
Marvel is attempting to simplify matters by giving Betsy a new codename: Butterfly. The change is intended to separate her from Kwannon and make her role in the upcoming Maximum X-Men easier to follow.

Why Betsy Braddock is no longer Psylocke
Maximum X-Men was announced as a series set after Avengers: Armageddon. Storm leads the new team, alongside Wolverine, Colossus, Bishop, Iceman, Firestar, Justice and Betsy Braddock. The initial announcement listed Betsy as Psylocke, creating confusion because Kwannon has used that name in recent years. The series announcement introduced the team and its post-event setting.

Betsy and Kwannon share a particularly tangled history. For decades, the two characters were involved in a body-swap storyline, with the British Betsy occupying Kwannon’s Asian body. That situation was eventually reversed, allowing Kwannon to adopt the Psylocke identity that Betsy had previously used. Betsy most recently operated as Captain Britain, a title also carried by multiple characters. More background on their intertwined history helps explain why the announcement caused uncertainty.
Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort revealed that Betsy will instead be called Butterfly in Maximum X-Men. The name refers to the purple energy that curls around her face when she uses her powers, creating a visual effect reminiscent of a butterfly.
The codename is not entirely unused. Layla Miller has also been called Butterfly, although she is not an A-list character and has not used the identity recently.
What to expect from Maximum X-Men

Storm’s team is presented as Earth’s final defence after the Avengers are no longer available in the aftermath of Avengers: Armageddon. The assignment is complicated by humanity’s often hostile relationship with mutants, meaning the X-Men may receive less public support than non-mutant heroes.
The group’s first major challenge comes from the Negative Zone. Early teases suggest the threat will be even more dangerous than Annihilus.
Christopher Yost is writing the series, while Tony S. Daniel is handling the artwork. Both creators have previous experience with X-Men stories. Yost describes the project as a combination of underdog heroes, enormous Avengers-scale danger, high-impact action, drama and a classic Chris Claremont-inspired tone.
“MAXIMUM X-MEN is everything I love about comics rolled into one,” Yost said, highlighting its underdog heroes, massive threats, action, drama and classic X-Men sensibilities.
Marvel plans to release the first issue of Maximum X-Men on 2 December 2026.

A name change with familiar comic-book logic
Butterfly may reduce the immediate confusion around Betsy and Kwannon, but it also adds another chapter to a character history built around changing bodies, titles and identities.
