Baldur’s Gate 3 has spent three years under intense scrutiny from players, dataminers and mod creators. Yet the game is still revealing discarded material, including a voice line that appears to have been recorded for a situation most players could never trigger.

A hidden Nautiloid voice line

The game opens with the player trapped aboard a Nautiloid, where a mind flayer orders them to locate and connect the transponder before escaping. A player using mods to begin the game as a mind flayer discovered that the commanding mind flayer has a specific line for addressing another mind flayer in that scene.
The discovery was made by Reddit user ImpressiveLie7365. Writer Rhiannon Bevan later recreated the unusual conditions and documented the result in an investigation of the hidden dialogue.
One possible explanation is that an early access version once included a temporary mind flayer companion. If so, that character may have been expected to initiate the opening sequence rather than the player character. The files do not confirm that theory, but the recorded line suggests the possibility.
Daisy returns from early access

The Nautiloid discovery is only one piece of a much larger fan preservation effort. During the July Baldur’s Gate 3 Modathon, modder HyperspaceTowel restored Daisy, the original dream visitor from early access.
Daisy was an unsettling and seductive predecessor to the full-release Guardian. She appeared as a tadpole-created hallucination, tempting the player with an apparently comfortable fantasy while their body and mind underwent frightening changes.
The Early Access Dream Visitor Restored mod adds four dream sequences instead of the Guardian’s two, along with additional companion responses and the Illithid powers connected to Daisy’s storyline. A new save is recommended when using it, so the restored content can appear correctly.
More than 100 conversations recovered

HyperspaceTowel has also restored an early access scene involving Astarion. In it, he wakes after a nightmare during a Long Rest and trusts the player enough to discuss Cazador, the vampire master who became his tormentor.
That scene forms part of Early Access Scenes Restored, a continuing project containing more than 100 conversations and 1,000 lines of dialogue.

The restoration project gives Astarion, Gale, Lae’zel and Shadowheart moments that disappeared before the full launch. Recovered material includes an argument about Gale’s deer stew, reactions to grave robbing and an earlier version of Shadowheart’s ultimatum. Some scenes remain intact from early access, while others have been reconstructed from separate files containing unused dialogue.

A living archive inside the game
The underlying files were not necessarily erased. Instead, many unused voice lines and scene fragments were left in the game’s data, allowing determined fans to connect the pieces years later.
For players who enjoy exploring how games are built, the story is a reminder that a finished release can contain traces of several earlier designs. In Baldur’s Gate 3, community research and modding continue to turn those traces into playable history.
