Helldivers 2 players are pushing back hard against an update that introduced Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC), with concerns ranging from broken mods and launch failures to the privacy implications of kernel-level software.

The update arrived on 20 October and has been followed by a sharp decline in the game’s recent user reviews. At the time covered here, roughly 37% of the last 10,000 or so Steam reviews were positive, leaving the game with a Mostly Negative rating. Players can check the current Steam rating as the situation develops.

Why the anti-cheat update has caused backlash

EAC has disrupted a number of Helldivers 2 modifications. Although many popular mods are cosmetic and do not change gameplay, other tools have become part of some players’ regular experience because they address bugs, awkward systems and perceived shortcomings that users believe should have been fixed by Arrowhead.

One widely downloaded example is the Vanilla Plus Megapack. Its listed quality-of-life changes include revised stratagem-toss physics, improved Hellpod steering and more reliable vaulting, among other adjustments.

Some users also report that EAC prevents the game from launching. Workarounds exist for certain cases, but players are particularly unhappy that an update has stopped a game that previously worked on their computers from starting normally.

The software itself is another source of concern. Because EAC operates at kernel level, it can receive near-total access to a user’s computer. That level of access has made some players reluctant to trust the system, even if it performs its intended anti-cheat role.

Players question the trade-off in a co-op game

Many players support efforts to combat cheating, but argue that the cost is difficult to justify in a cooperative player-versus-environment game rather than a competitive player-versus-player title. Reports that some users have bypassed the protection have intensified that frustration.

Examples shared by players include machine guns firing mini-nuke projectiles and apparently near-infinite Exosuit stratagem spawns. A reported near-infinite Exosuit stratagem has been cited as evidence by critics who believe the update delivers too many disadvantages for legitimate players without fully stopping exploits.

A history of difficult decisions

Since its 2024 launch, Helldivers 2 has experienced several surges and downturns. Its major Steam debut was nearly overshadowed when Sony attempted to enforce a PlayStation account sign-in requirement. Broad player opposition prevented that requirement from being imposed on the existing player base.

Players have also criticised the game’s microtransaction-focused Warbonds and a range of balancing decisions. Given that the PlayStation sign-in policy was previously abandoned after backlash, the current dispute has raised questions about whether Arrowhead could eventually reverse or modify the EAC change as well.

For Australian players, Helldivers 2 is available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X. The controversy also highlights a wider issue for modern gaming: updates intended to protect online communities can create serious compatibility, privacy and mod-support concerns when they alter how a game runs on personal computers.
