Zelda Switch 2 Console Launch Hit by Retailer Delays

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time special-edition Nintendo Switch 2 console launches on 29 October, but some customers are discovering that a pre-order does not guarantee a smooth release-day collection or delivery.

The gold-coloured hardware had already sold out repeatedly online before launch, leaving shoppers without pre-orders facing limited prospects. However, the bigger surprise has been the number of problems reported by customers who believed their consoles were secured.

Walmart customers told to expect delays

Walmart contacted some buyers just one day before release to say their orders could not be fulfilled on time. The retailer reportedly oversold its available Switch 2 stock, while third-party sellers on the same marketplace continued listing consoles for hundreds of dollars above the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Customer-service representatives said the stock problem could not be fixed immediately.

Release-day notices at some Walmart stores blamed a supply-chain delay and said staff could not sell the console, including to customers with pre-orders. The messages indicated that orders should eventually be completed once each affected store receives its shipment. Walmart has also said the disruption should not lead to cancellations.

The situation has been inconsistent from store to store. Some locations warned customers of a delay early in the morning, then received stock later that day. Even where consoles were physically available, staff were reportedly unable to scan them for sale. Customers who were turned away may wish to check again, although another failed collection remains possible.

Reports from retail coverage and some Walmart stores illustrate how differently the launch is unfolding across locations.

Target orders are also affected

Walmart is not the only major retailer facing fulfilment issues. Some customers who ordered the Zelda edition from Target online say their consoles have not shipped, or have been pushed back to the middle of November. That would place delivery after the Ocarina of Time remake is released. Other Target shoppers report that their orders were cancelled altogether.

For Australian buyers, these reports are a reminder that retailer confirmation and actual dispatch are separate steps during a high-demand hardware launch. Checking the order status, collection instructions and delivery estimate remains more useful than relying only on the original pre-order confirmation.

Best Buy appears steadier, but game orders lag

Best Buy’s midnight launch is scheduled for 5 November, one week after the other retailers mentioned here, and appears to have avoided most of the console-stock disruption. Some customers are nevertheless unhappy because their copies of the game are not due to ship until the day after release, potentially adding several more days before arrival.

The game itself is expected to be easier to find than the limited Zelda hardware. Major retailers are still accepting game pre-orders, even as the special-edition console remains the harder item to secure.

What this means for collectors

This launch highlights the difference between a limited console and a standard software release. A pre-order can reserve a place in a retailer’s system, but supply-chain delays, overselling and store-level scanning restrictions can still affect when the hardware reaches the customer.

At present, the retailer reports point to a launch that is uneven rather than universally cancelled. Some orders may arrive later than planned, some collections may require another store visit, and some customers may lose their allocation entirely. The most reliable outcome will depend on each retailer’s stock position and the timing of its incoming shipment.
