The Rings of Power Season 3 Plans a Fresh Start
Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will take a new direction in season 3, with showrunner Patrick McKay describing it as the beginning of “a whole new story”.

Viewers who have not yet watched all 16 episodes from the first two seasons may find the next chapter easier to enter. A five-year time jump follows season 2, giving the creative team an opportunity to refresh the setting, status quo and audience entry point.
In a lengthy set interview with Talking to IGN, McKay explained that he and co-showrunner J.D. Payne admire series that use major time jumps to create a clean break. He cited Battlestar Galactica and Halt and Catch Fire as examples of shows that made this approach engaging for viewers.
A five-year jump changes the show’s starting point

The second season ended with Sauron revealing his identity as the new Dark Lord of Middle-earth. His armies drove the elves into retreat, while the wider conflict continued to gather momentum.
Before that, Sauron dealt with resistance from Adar, an original character created for the series. Adar was among the first elves Sauron corrupted and transformed into Orcs, but he objected to his people serving as the Dark Lord’s soldiers. He briefly offered peace to Galadriel before Sauron killed him.
Adar does not appear in J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings. The series takes considerable creative freedom because Tolkien provided relatively little detail about the Second Age, the period in which the show is set. McKay said that this era leaves room for original characters.

The One Ring will remain central to season 3
McKay has promised a larger and more ambitious season, with the battle for Middle-earth intensifying. The surviving elves may be joined by the Númenóreans and dwarves as the forces opposing Sauron regroup.
The season’s central thread will be the One Ring, which Sauron still needs to forge. McKay said the production is proud of its first two seasons but now considers season 3 a turning point and the start of a new story.
