Gladiator II finds a streaming second wind on Netflix

Ridley Scott remains one of cinema’s most recognisable directors, with films such as Alien and Blade Runner among his best-known work. However, his projects have not always translated into strong box-office results. His latest cinematic release, an adaptation of Peter Heller’s 2012 novel The Dog Stars, opened in Australian spring 2026 with a modest US domestic debut of $7.7 million.
Scott’s 2024 historical sequel, Gladiator II, is now having a considerably stronger moment on streaming. The film arrived on Netflix on 21 October and reached the service’s US Top 10 movie chart by 23 October.
Why Gladiator II is drawing attention
The result is notable because Gladiator II earned $462.2 million worldwide against a reported production budget ranging from $210 million to $310 million. Its theatrical performance made profitability a difficult proposition, but streaming visibility has given the sequel a fresh audience.
Netflix’s published figures placed Gladiator II at number nine among all films watched during the week of 19–25 October, recording more than three million views. The same overall top 10 included Ben Affleck’s Animals, several entries in the animated Ice Age series and Hot Wheels Let’s Race: Attack of the T-Rex.

A return to ancient Rome
The sequel continues the story of Rome years after Maximus’s death. Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, is forced into the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical emperors ruling the empire. With Rome’s future at stake, he draws on his past as he seeks the strength and honour needed to restore glory to its people.
The cast also features Pedro Pascal as General Acacius, Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, Denzel Washington as Macrinus, Joseph Quinn as Geta, Fred Hechinger as Caracalla, Lior Raz as Viggo and Derek Jacobi as Gracchus.
Could streaming influence a third film?
Scott previously discussed plans to expand the story into a third film, although no further updates have been provided in the years since those comments. A strong Netflix run cannot guarantee another sequel, but renewed attention may help demonstrate continued interest in the series.
