Hope, the 156-minute Korean science-fiction action film featuring Michael Fassbender, is building momentum after its brief cinema run. The 2026 release has begun climbing digital charts in North America, giving its ambitious genre story a second life at home.

Why Hope is attracting attention

Fassbender has moved between drama, superhero cinema and science fiction throughout his career. His credits include Oscar-nominated performances in 12 Years a Slave and Steve Jobs, along with Magneto in the X-Men films and the synthetic David in Alien: Covenant.

Hope became available to rent and buy digitally on Monday, 12 October 2026. Since then, it has risen on services including Apple TV and Amazon Video in North America. Its theatrical release lasted only a few weeks, taking just over $8 million domestically and $46 million worldwide.

A strange investigation in South Korea

Writer-director Na Hong-jin places the story in the remote South Korean village of Hope Harbor. Police chief Bum-seok and officer Sung-ae are called in after a mysterious creature begins causing havoc in the community.

The investigation gradually exposes a more complicated threat. Misunderstandings fuel human conflict, while the consequences expand towards a tragedy with cosmic implications. Fassbender and Alicia Vikander are central to that unfolding disaster, but the film’s action set-pieces are equally important.

One extended sequence involving horses is particularly unusual, making Hope the kind of film that is difficult to summarise without giving away its surprises. Viewers who enjoy bold genre spectacle may find its scale more memorable than its modest cinema revenue suggests.

The film also marks the first onscreen collaboration in more than a decade between Fassbender and Vikander, who met while working on the 2016 drama The Light Between Oceans. Vikander is known for films including Ex Machina and Tomb Raider.

From Cannes and Comic-Con to digital release

Hope premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and competed for the Palme d’Or, although the prize went to Fjord, starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. Interest continued through the year, including a dedicated panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

Distributor NEON also gave the film the widest domestic cinema release for a Korean production since Parasite in 2019. It played in more than 1,500 theatres and was presented in premium formats including 4DX, Dolby, ScreenX and D-Box.

That theatrical push did not translate into a major box-office result, but the film’s digital performance suggests that its unusual premise and long-form action may be better suited to curious home viewers. What makes Hope stand out

Between its remote-village setting, creature mystery, escalating conflict and cosmic scale, Hope occupies an unusual place within 2026’s science-fiction releases. Fassbender and Vikander provide recognisable international leads, while Na Hong-jin’s direction gives the film a distinctive Korean genre identity.

Its rise on digital rental and purchase charts shows that a short theatrical run does not necessarily end a film’s journey. For Australian viewers, digital availability and local platform listings may vary, so checking the relevant service remains the safest way to confirm access.
