Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has earned the franchise’s strongest Metacritic score in 15 years, yet Activision has offered little detail about sales after its first complete launch weekend. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma did announce that the wider series has passed $40 billion in lifetime revenue, but that figure does not reveal how Microsoft’s biggest blockbuster of 2026 is performing.

The campaign has received strong reviews, while early reactions to DMZ and multiplayer have also been encouraging. However, MW4 has recorded weaker Steam concurrent-player figures than Black Ops 6, despite not being included in Game Pass on day one this year. Steam activity is only one measure, but Activision has not published launch sales, player totals or a new record for the game.

That restrained approach resembles the company’s messaging around Black Ops 7 in 2025. It is a sharp contrast with the publisher’s earlier habit of presenting opening-weekend revenue alongside Hollywood box-office comparisons.

The shift is especially clear when the franchise’s historical announcements are placed side by side. Earlier statements often highlighted estimated sell-through, unit totals, digital records and entertainment-industry milestones. More recent updates have increasingly focused on engagement, community response or broad franchise achievements.

The biggest historical benchmarks

Black Ops 3 is reportedly the best-selling entry, with 43 million copies sold. Activision described its opening weekend as 2015’s biggest entertainment launch after it generated more than $550 million in worldwide sell-through.

The 2019 Modern Warfare is reported as the second-best-selling instalment, reaching 41 million copies. Activision called its launch the biggest for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One generation, stating that its opening weekend more than doubled the box-office debut of Joker.

By comparison, Sharma’s message about MW4 praised its reception and confirmed the $40 billion lifetime franchise milestone without providing a game-specific sales number. Microsoft’s next earnings call was scheduled for October 28, when further information could have offered a clearer indication of the release’s performance.

Call of Duty launch announcements since 2009

Modern Warfare 2

Activision estimated that Modern Warfare 2 generated $310 million in sell-through across North America and the United Kingdom during its first 24 hours. The company said approximately 4.7 million copies were sold in those territories, supported by midnight openings at more than 10,000 US retailers. It presented the result as the biggest launch in entertainment history.

Black Ops

Activision estimated first-day sell-through of approximately $360 million in North America and the United Kingdom, exceeding Modern Warfare 2’s $310 million figure. It also estimated sales of 5.6 million copies in those markets, compared with 4.7 million for the previous year’s release.

Modern Warfare 3

Based on Charttrack data and retail customer sell-through information, Modern Warfare 3 passed $1 billion in sales 16 days after launching on November 8, 2011. That was one day faster than the 2009 film Avatar reached the same milestone.

Black Ops 2

Black Ops II recorded estimated worldwide sell-through above $500 million in its first 24 hours, using Chart-Track data, retail information and internal estimates. Activision described it as the fourth consecutive year in which the series had delivered the year’s biggest entertainment launch. The company also said franchise sales had exceeded the worldwide theatrical receipts of the Harry Potter and Star Wars film franchises, while warning that the wider economic environment remained uncertain.

Ghosts

More than $1 billion of Call of Duty: Ghosts was shipped into retail stores worldwide on its first day. Activision said the series had generated four billion hours of gameplay during the year, but also acknowledged that it was too early to assess consumer sell-through for Ghosts.

Advanced Warfare

Activision called Advanced Warfare the biggest entertainment launch of 2014 by revenue, ahead of video games, films, music and books. The publisher said franchise revenue had passed $10 billion worldwide since the series began in 2003, exceeding the combined box-office receipts of The Hunger Games, Transformers, Iron Man and Avengers.

Black Ops 3

Black Ops 3 generated more than $550 million in worldwide sell-through during its first three days, according to Activision’s estimates. The company labelled it the biggest entertainment launch of 2015 and reported a franchise record for engagement per player. Players also logged more than 75 million online hours during that opening period.

Infinite Warfare

Activision described Infinite Warfare as the top-selling console game in the United States by year-to-date revenue from physical unit sales. Released on November 4, it also led November’s physical console software revenue rankings. The publisher said Call of Duty was North America’s leading console franchise by year-to-date physical revenue for the eighth consecutive year.

WWII

Call of Duty: WWII exceeded $500 million in worldwide sell-through during its first three days, which Activision compared with the combined theatrical openings of Thor: Ragnarok and Wonder Woman. On PlayStation 4, it set a record for first-day digital full-game unit sales, while global launch unit sales doubled year over year.

Black Ops 4

Black Ops 4 passed $500 million in worldwide sell-through during its first three days. It also set franchise records on current-generation consoles for combined players, average hours per player and total hours played. Across its three modes, its opening-period player count exceeded the comparable figures for both WWII and Black Ops 3.

Modern Warfare (2019)

The 2019 Modern Warfare generated more than $600 million in worldwide sell-through in its first three days. It sold more units during that period than any other series entry in the console generation, became 2019’s top-selling new premium game and set Activision’s record for the biggest digital opening. Its launch-weekend revenue also exceeded twice the theatrical opening of Joker.

Black Ops Cold War

Activision’s launch message for Black Ops Cold War concentrated on digital performance. The game set a franchise record for highest first-day digital sales worldwide, while the publisher said it was launching into the series’ largest and most engaged community. It also promised substantial free post-launch content, events and ongoing support.

Vanguard

The announcement for Vanguard focused on its worldwide release and content offering rather than an opening sales figure. Activision highlighted the single-player campaign, 20 multiplayer maps at launch, a new Zombies experience and deeper integration with Warzone. The new Pacific experience and Caldera map were scheduled for December 2.

Modern Warfare II (2022)

Modern Warfare II generated more than $800 million in worldwide sell-through during its first three days after releasing on October 28, 2022. Activision called it the franchise’s biggest opening weekend and said it surpassed the combined worldwide box-office openings of Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It also set a franchise record for digital opening sales during its first three days.

Modern Warfare 3 (2023)

The launch update for Modern Warfare 3 highlighted player engagement rather than revenue. Players recorded the highest average hours per player for a new premium entry during a Thanksgiving holiday weekend since 2019. The message also promoted the planned addition of the Shipment playlist.

Black Ops 6

Activision called Black Ops 6 the biggest release in series history, reporting records for day-one players and Game Pass subscriber additions. Unit sales on PlayStation and Steam were also reported to be more than 60 per cent higher year over year.

Black Ops 7

The Black Ops 7 launch statement was notably brief. It said players had responded positively to the quality and depth of the gameplay across the opening weekend, without publishing sales, player or revenue figures.

Modern Warfare 4

The current update praises Modern Warfare 4 as one of the most celebrated entries in the series’ 24-year history and confirms that lifetime franchise revenue has reached $40 billion. It does not state how many copies the game has sold, how much revenue it generated at launch or whether it established a new opening record.

From blockbuster comparisons to selective metrics

The pattern is not simply that sales announcements have disappeared. Instead, the emphasis has moved between physical sell-through, digital sales, subscription growth, player counts, hours played and broad franchise milestones. That makes direct comparisons across nearly two decades difficult, particularly as distribution has shifted from retail launches towards digital storefronts, subscriptions and ongoing live-service support.
