Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is shaping up as a polished return to Lara Croft’s original adventure, with new footage revisiting familiar locations, puzzles and enemies while adding modern systems.

The remake was revealed during the original game’s 30th anniversary celebrations. The first Tomb Raider launched on Sega Saturn before arriving on PlayStation and PC a month later, making Sega’s ill-fated 3D console the first home for the landmark adventure.

The latest footage was shown at the TR30 Derby and MCM London. It combines recognisable moments from the 1996 game with considerably more detailed visuals, giving classic Lara’s platforming and combat a modern presentation.

Legacy of Atlantis revisits four memorable locations

The remake travels through four major settings: Peru, Greece, Egypt and Atlantis. The footage includes the giant Atlas puzzle, battles against monstrous Atlanteans and the dangerous encounter with King Midas’ statue.

That last moment also offers a striking demonstration of the remake’s visual upgrade: Lara can once again suffer the unfortunate consequences of touching the statue’s hand and becoming golden.

Classic movement meets new gameplay systems

Legacy of Atlantis is not intended to reproduce the original adventure scene for scene. Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog are retaining Lara’s familiar acrobatics and gunplay while introducing systems designed for a contemporary action game.

  • A Focus meter that charges as Lara takes damage, deals damage and dodges attacks.
  • A Focus ability that slows time and helps unlock more of Lara’s signature acrobatic moves.
  • Skill trees and crafting that expand the remake beyond its 1996 design.

Game director Raul Siquera described Focus as a way to let players showcase moves associated with Lara’s earliest incarnation after building enough energy during combat.

For readers comparing the remake with other arcade and gaming news, the project is an interesting example of how a classic adventure can preserve its defining identity without freezing its mechanics in time.

Release details and Lara’s alternate outfit

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X on 12 February 2027.

Lara’s standard appearance uses the classic shorts-and-tank-top design. Players who prefer her look from the Survivor trilogy can receive that costume as a pre-order incentive.

The deluxe and collector’s editions include 48-hour early access for players keen to return to the original adventure ahead of the standard release.

Another Lara Croft adventure is planned for 2027

Crystal Dynamics is also developing Tomb Raider: Catalyst, another Lara Croft game planned for 2027. It will take the character in a new direction across Northern India.

The story follows a mythical cataclysm that has released ancient secrets and awakened the mysterious forces protecting them. That makes Catalyst a separate new adventure, rather than another retelling of the original game.
