Scream 7 has turned a turbulent production story into a substantial commercial win. Released in Australian cinemas in February 2026, the latest Ghostface thriller earned more than $200 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $45 million.

The film has also carried that momentum into streaming. Scream 7 arrived on Prime Video on 16 October 2026 and ranked as the service’s sixth most-watched film in the United States on 24 October, based on figures tracked by data aggregator FlixPatrol.

Neve Campbell returns as Sidney Prescott

A major draw for the seventh film is the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott. Campbell did not appear in Scream 6 after a salary dispute, but this instalment places Sidney back at the centre of the story.

Sidney and her teenage daughter, Tatum, played by newcomer Isabel May, are living a peaceful life in Indiana when Ghostface reappears. A series of videos taunts Sidney with killers from her past, prompting her to seek help from Gale Weathers.

Courteney Cox reprises the role of Gale, while Matthew Lillard, Scott Foley and Laurie Metcalf also return as familiar figures connected to the franchise’s earlier chapters.

The box-office result made Scream 7 the highest-grossing film in the series’ 30-year history. Paramount’s figures put it above the 1996 original, which made $173 million worldwide, and 2023’s Scream 6, which finished with $166 million.

Siblings Tara and Sam Carpenter (Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera) flee in panic in a scene from Scream 6.

Major casting controversies failed to stop the film

The film’s strong performance arrived after several highly publicised changes to its cast. Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, who played sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter in the revival that began in 2022, did not return for the seventh film.

Barrera was dismissed after posting support for Palestine on social media following the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack in Israel. Spyglass, the production company, described her posts as antisemitic and said it had “zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form.”

Barrera defended her position in an Instagram post, saying that her platform gave her a responsibility to raise awareness of issues she cared about. She also wrote that everyone deserved equal human rights, dignity and freedom, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality or socioeconomic status.

Ortega left the project soon after Barrera’s dismissal. The departure of both Carpenter sisters divided fans and changed the direction of the franchise before cameras rolled.

Matthew Lillard reflects on returning

Matthew Lillard returned as Stu Macher, one of the series’ best-known characters, but later expressed regret about taking part. He told Variety that he felt ashamed for not thinking more carefully about Barrera’s situation before agreeing to return.

“I still like being in the movie [but] it may not have been the best idea,” Lillard said.

That tension makes Scream 7 an unusual franchise success: its production controversies remained part of the public conversation, yet they did not prevent the film from becoming the series’ biggest global box-office performer or from finding a sizeable Prime Video audience.
