For readers following the wider arcade and gaming news landscape, the change is another reminder that major games businesses can shift direction quickly.

Why Helen Chiang joined the Xbox leadership team

Chiang’s appointment was announced in July 2026, in the same Resetting Xbox update that confirmed 3,200 job cuts. Before taking the COO role, she was studio head at Mojang, the developer behind Minecraft.

As COO, Chiang was given end-to-end profit-and-loss responsibility across Xbox’s content, hardware, platform and services businesses. CEO Asha Sharma said the role would bring those areas together through a single operating model, support clearer investment decisions, encourage learning from successes and failures, and increase accountability for results.

Chiang’s departure confirmed

Chiang has now left Xbox, just over three months after the leadership announcement. The Verge reports that Sharma confirmed the departure in a brief internal message to Xbox developers.

Sharma thanked Chiang for her years of service and said Xbox would provide more information about COO leadership once its plans were finalised. Xbox vice-president of communications Kari Perez gave a similarly brief public response, saying the company does not discuss individual personal matters, while thanking Chiang for her service and wishing her well.

A year of major changes at Xbox

Sharma became Xbox CEO in February, and the company has undergone significant changes since then. Alongside the 3,200 redundancies, Xbox added Chiang as COO and Matthew Ball as Chief Strategy Officer. It also changed course on console exclusivity and spun off or closed Double Fine, Compulsion Games, Undead Labs and Ninja Theory.

The leadership picture remains unsettled. In a February interview with Windows Central, Sharma described the company’s approach as a plan that remains in place until it no longer does. Chiang will not be part of that next phase as COO, and Xbox has not identified who will replace her.

As of the source report, Xbox had two first-party games scheduled for 2027: Fable and Clockwork Revolution. Further rounds of redundancies were also reported as possible in the coming months. Xbox may additionally release a handheld gaming device connected to Project Helix next year.

What the change means for Xbox fans

Chiang’s short tenure does not, by itself, reveal how Xbox’s games, hardware or services plans will change. It does show that the company’s operating structure is still being adjusted while it prepares for the next generation.
