Electronic Arts has announced a major restructuring that includes 400 job losses and the closure of BioWare. The changes have also intensified uncertainty around The Sims, a long-running life-simulation franchise already surrounded by delays, downgraded plans and speculation that The Sims 5 may never arrive.

In an internal email shared on Wednesday, EA executives Cam Weber and David Tinson said development of the game known by the codename Project Lotus would be paused. The announcement places renewed attention on the company’s broader plans for The Sims.

“In Lifestyle, we’re focusing on the long-term potential of The Sims and skate. We’re going to prioritize our efforts on ‘Project Evergreen’ for The Sims to give the team more time to reach the full potential and vision for the game, and to help make this possible, we’re pausing development on ‘Project Lotus.’”

The news prompted an immediate split among players. Some welcomed the apparent end of a controversial project, while others questioned the long-term health of the series under EA. one fan commented that “Sims 4 not making it out 2026 THE END IS NIGH”.

What are Project Lotus and Project Evergreen?

Project Lotus was widely believed to be another codename for Project Rene. That project was first presented as a possible successor to The Sims 4 and appeared likely to become The Sims 5, although EA avoided committing to that name.

Early material pointed to detailed customisation tools and multiplayer features. Around 2024, however, the project appeared to have been downgraded to a mobile game around 2024, after screenshots circulated showing similarities to earlier mobile entries in the franchise.

Project Rene was also described as free to play, with reports suggesting it could develop into a platform comparable to Roblox. Later playtests of the game even included blatant ripoffs of popular Roblox experiences, including Dress to Impress.

There is considerably less confirmed information about Project Evergreen, which is now the focus for developer Maxis. Reports have suggested that it might be the new name for Project X, a separate single-player project that appears closer to a traditional mainline Sims release.

That possibility has encouraged some players who hope Evergreen could ultimately become The Sims 5, or at least offer a clearer direction than the reported plans for Rene. A difficult road ahead for The Sims

Even if Project Evergreen becomes the next numbered Sims game, the current situation leaves plenty of room for concern. The codename itself may prove especially awkward after players spent so many years with The Sims 4, which launched in 2014 and became free to play years later.

For now, EA’s decision pauses one project while giving another more time to reach its intended scope. Until Maxis shares clearer details, the future of the franchise remains unresolved.
