Final Fantasy XIV is about to add a keyboard-based attraction to the Manderville Gold Saucer, but its first announcement has already triggered criticism from players.

Named Keybound Brawler, the minigame arrives on 28 October 2026. Its debut is a collaboration with the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, part of a broader crossover that also includes a raid series themed around the remake trilogy. The Gold Saucer itself is FFXIV’s leisure and gambling hub, where players can spend gil on diversions away from the main world-saving storyline.

A typing game aimed at a controller-heavy audience

Keybound Brawler takes inspiration from keyboard-focused games such as Typing of the Dead. Success requires players to use a keyboard, which creates an awkward hurdle for a substantial part of FFXIV’s console community.

Many console players do not keep a keyboard within reach. Purchasing or borrowing an inexpensive keyboard may solve the practical problem, but the objection is also about principle: players who have used a controller for more than a decade are being asked to obtain additional hardware for one slice of the game.

The issue is particularly noticeable following the game’s launch on Nintendo Switch 2, which has introduced FFXIV to another console audience. The official announcement describes the activity as a test of typing reflexes and confirms its 28 October arrival.

Gender-locked rewards create a sharper reaction

The more contentious issue concerns the crossover rewards. The first version of Keybound Brawler will let players earn outfits styled after Barret and Tifa, but Barret’s clothing is limited to male characters while Tifa’s outfit is limited to female characters.

That decision has landed badly in a game where collecting and styling glamour gear is a major endgame activity. One player described the restriction as disappointing, questioned Square Enix’s earlier commitment to removing gender locks from cosmetics and said it had weakened their interest in returning for the event.

Another player asked for both outfits to be available across character genders, specifically mentioning the wish to put the Tifa glamour on a Clive Rosfield character, as actor Ben Starr has done. The two public reactions appeared on 21 October 2026: one player’s criticism and a request to unlock both glamour sets.

Why the restriction feels out of step

The reaction is amplified by Square Enix’s earlier changes to clothing restrictions in FFXIV. In 2020, game director Naoki Yoshida announced that gender limits on wedding outfits would be removed. Before the Endwalker expansion, the game also removed gender restrictions from maid outfits, around the time male Viera became a character option.

Against that history, the decision to restrict costumes in a high-profile Final Fantasy VII crossover looks like a step backwards to some players. The outfits are designed around recognisable characters, but the limits prevent players from freely mixing those looks with their chosen Warriors of Light.

Keybound Brawler has not launched yet, so reactions may change once the activity is available and players can try the rewards themselves. For now, the upcoming Gold Saucer addition is facing two separate complaints: its keyboard requirement and its gender-specific approach to crossover glamour.
