The Mighty Nein’s Next Adventure Brings Beau and Yasha Together

Critical Role’s Mighty Nein continues to grow beyond its original campaign. Following the animated series’ debut in December 2025, the party has appeared in additional stories, including the novel Critical Role: The Mighty Nein – Stories Untold and live-show one-shots such as Projekt Funball.

The next major addition is Critical Role: The Mighty Nein – Children of the Empire, a novel by Hugo, Ignyte and Nebula Award nominee Nibedita Sen, published by Random House Worlds. Its story centres on Caleb Widogast and Beauregard Lionett, two members of the group known as the “Empire Kids”.

While much of the Mighty Nein has stepped back for a quieter life, Caleb and Beau still have unfinished business. Their return to the empire they once called home brings old loyalties, dangerous organisations and new turmoil back into focus.

Caleb soon finds an opportunity to investigate the Cerberus Assembly and Ludinus Da’leth. The choice could require him to turn against people he once cared about. Beau joins the investigation after hearing about it, partly because the work offers an escape from the uncertainty of settling into domestic life with Yasha.

An excerpt from Children of the Empire explores Beau and Yasha’s relationship through a training session. Yasha is working with a group of children, and Beau agrees to demonstrate their fighting styles in front of them.

The sparring match quickly becomes a familiar contest between Beau’s speed, balance and precision and Yasha’s immense strength. Beau relies on movement and timing to avoid heavy blows, while Yasha repeatedly challenges her not to hold back.

As the exercise continues, Beau’s admiration for Yasha is mixed with doubt. She struggles with the idea that she may not deserve the happiness they have built together, even as Yasha makes it clear that their relationship is a source of strength rather than a restraint.

Yasha eventually brings the bout to an end and reassures Beau that she is not too much to love. Beau answers that Yasha is not a burden or a limitation, but the person who gives her the confidence to keep moving forward.

The emotional exchange leads to a spontaneous proposal. In front of the children, Beau asks Yasha whether she wants to get married. Yasha accepts, giving the pair a significant new milestone as the wider story returns to the empire’s unresolved conflicts.
