The Prestige returns to cinemas in 2027
Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige will return to cinemas on 29 January 2027, marking its 20th anniversary with a Walt Disney Studios rerelease.
The Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale mystery thriller will receive 70mm and IMAX screenings. These presentations will be a first for the film, giving audiences a new opportunity to experience Nolan’s intricate period drama on a much larger screen.

Nolan has since made major cinematic events from original projects including Tenet and the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer. His latest blockbuster, The Odyssey, continues that run by bringing Homer’s ancient epic to cinemas this summer.

What is The Prestige about?
Adapted from Christopher Priest’s novel, The Prestige is set in turn-of-the-century London and follows two magicians whose friendship collapses into a bitter professional feud.
Hugh Jackman plays Robert Angier, a charismatic showman, while Christian Bale portrays Alfred Borden, a highly skilled illusionist. The pair begin as friends and stage partners, but a trick that goes wrong sets them on a dangerous path of rivalry.

Angier and Borden become consumed by their competition. They use deception, sabotage and increasingly hazardous illusions as they try to establish themselves as the greatest magician alive. The film’s non-linear structure, hidden clues and puzzle-like storytelling have helped make it a lasting favourite among Nolan fans.

A celebrated ensemble and lasting reputation
The cast also includes Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Andy Serkis and David Bowie.
The film received strong reviews after its 2006 release and earned two Academy Award nominations: one for cinematography and another for art direction. Its reputation has continued to grow, helped by its elaborate plot and memorable final revelation.

The 2027 cinema return will let audiences revisit the mystery in a communal big-screen setting, with the added distinction of 70mm and IMAX presentations. Viewers looking for more screen-sized entertainment can also explore arcade videos and RETROCADE’s virtual pinball machines.

Why the rerelease matters
The Prestige remains one of Nolan’s most enduring films because its central rivalry, layered narrative and carefully placed details reward close attention. The anniversary rerelease offers both longtime viewers and newcomers a chance to examine its visual design on formats the film has not previously received.
