Sony has opened pre-orders for a cheaper PlayStation 5 model in Japan, offering a lower-cost route into the current generation for buyers prepared to accept significant regional restrictions.
What is the Midnight Black PS5?
The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black was announced earlier in October, with pre-orders beginning on 20 October 2026. It is scheduled to launch on 19 November 2026, the same day as Grand Theft Auto 6, and costs 55,000 yen, or approximately $350 in the United States.
The console and its bundled DualSense controller use a matte-black finish. This is a digital-only system, so it does not include a built-in disc drive. Sony does sell a compatible Midnight Black disc drive separately for 11,980 yen, roughly $75.
The Midnight Black version is otherwise the same as the Japan-exclusive PS5 model introduced in 2025. Sony created that system to offer a comparatively lower Japanese price in response to import tariffs and trade policies. Why the lower price comes with major restrictions
Australian and other overseas buyers should not assume this is an easy bargain. Retailers including Amazon Japan, Rakuten and Yodobashi restrict sales of the cheaper model outside Japan. Amazon Japan lists the console, but international purchasing remains restricted.
Sony’s support information states that the Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition supports only Japanese as its console language and works with Japanese PlayStation accounts whose country or region is set to Japan. Accounts from other countries or regions are not supported.
In practical terms, the Japanese console can:
- Access only the Japanese PlayStation Store.
- Run digital PS5 games bought from the Japanese PlayStation Store.
- Run supported digital PS4 games bought from the Japanese PlayStation Store.
Is the Japan-only PS5 worth considering?
For most buyers outside Japan, the language, account and storefront limitations outweigh the saving. The digital-only design also means that anyone wanting physical games will need to purchase the additional disc drive, increasing the overall cost.
A more practical alternative may be a second-hand PS5 paired with Midnight Black console covers sold through PlayStation’s direct store. Buyers can also consider purchasing a new standard PS5 before prices rise again.
The Japanese release follows a wider trend of region-specific console pricing. Nintendo also sells a Japan-only Switch 2 that is region- and language-locked. It costs 49,980 yen, approximately $315, compared with $499.99 for the North American Switch 2.
