DC’s Green Lanterns are heading into a brutal new universe
DC has announced Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos, a six-issue Elseworlds miniseries that reimagines the Green Lantern Corps as heavily armed cosmic soldiers. The project comes after HBO’s Lanterns concluded without a confirmed second season, giving fans another very different take on the character to follow.

Written by Dan Watters and drawn by Kyle Hotz, the series gives its Lanterns a distinctly Warhammer 40,000-inspired appearance. They are armoured, battle-worn and equipped for a vast interstellar conflict, with the visual style leaning into oversized weapons and military science fiction.
A war between humanity and the Corps
In this alternate continuity, the Empire of Humanity has spent centuries conquering the galaxy and forcing planet after planet into submission. The militarised Green Lantern Corps is the only major power still resisting the human campaign.
Hal Jordan begins the story as a human soldier serving that empire. After Oliver Queen betrays him and leaves him for dead on an alien world, the Corps rescues Hal and removes his conditioning. He becomes its only human fighter, turning his knowledge of humanity’s war machine against the empire itself.
That relationship is notably different from the main DC timeline, where Jordan and Queen became close during their famous long-running comic-book adventures. Here, Oliver’s betrayal places the two characters on opposite sides of a galaxy-spanning conflict.

A worn-down Corps facing impossible odds
Hotz described the visual approach as a balance between extravagant space opera and the story’s emotional weight. The Lanterns are intended to look exhausted and outmatched, with damaged armour and weapons kept operational using improvised repairs such as tape and wire. They are soldiers nearing the end of a losing fight rather than pristine superheroes.
Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos follows Hal Jordan through the burning remains of an unfamiliar DC Universe as he fights for peace by taking the war to the shores of Hell itself. Once an agent of humanity, Hal must now serve as the Corps’ strategic weapon against his former civilisation.
Why Elseworlds suits Green Lantern
Because Doomed Cosmos exists outside DC’s standard continuity, its creators can rebuild the setting and change established relationships without altering the core timeline. That same freedom has allowed other Green Lantern stories to explore radically different directions, including darker fantasy interpretations and unfamiliar versions of the wider DC mythology.
For readers who enjoy worlds built around bold visual ideas, the series has the same appeal as choosing a distinctive arcade cabinet for a dedicated games room: the concept is immediately recognisable, but the presentation is deliberately transformed.
Release details for Australian readers
The first issue is scheduled for 20 January 2027. It will be 32 pages and priced at $4.99 in the source market. A $7.99 foil variant by Björn Barends is also planned, alongside variant covers by Barends, Steve Beach and Ashley Wood.
Watters and Hotz are joined by colourist Dan Brown and letterer Steve Wands. The six-issue format and military science-fiction design make this a particularly unusual addition to DC’s alternate-universe catalogue.
