Netflix’s Film Division Faces a Major Creative Shake-Up

Netflix is changing its creative leadership after cutting around 1,000 jobs across several divisions. The restructuring includes the reported departure of film chairman Dan Lin, whose tenure involved projects such as Apex, The Rip and Remarkably Bright Creatures.

The leadership changes arrive as the streaming company responds to concerns about audience engagement, programming performance and a period of stock stagnation. Lin joined Netflix in 2024 and approved more than 80 films during his two years in the role.

Dan Lin’s Netflix projects extend into the future

Although Lin is reportedly out, several films associated with his time at Netflix have yet to arrive on the service. They include Here Comes the Flood, a heist film starring Denzel Washington and Robert Pattinson; David Fincher and Quentin Tarantino’s The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth; and Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.

Before joining Netflix, Lin founded and served as chief executive of Rideback, the entertainment company behind The Lego Movie, Stephen King’s It and the Sherlock Holmes franchise. At Warner Bros. Pictures, he worked on films including Martin Scorsese’s The Departed.

Two of Lin’s former Warner Bros. colleagues, Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, are reportedly being considered for roles in the new Netflix structure. Both previously led the Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group. Netflix also attempted, unsuccessfully, to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery earlier in 2026.

Netflix is also replacing its chief content officer

Lin’s reported exit follows the departure of chief content officer Bela Bajaria, who spent 10 years at Netflix. Peter Rice is due to replace her next week. Rice previously served as chairman of Walt Disney Television and chairman of General Entertainment at The Walt Disney Company.

“Peter is one of the most effective at-scale operators in the entertainment industry. His business acumen is sharp, his talent relationships are exceptionally strong, and his experience across TV and film is deep and broad,” Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said in a message to employees.

Sarandos added that Rice understands what makes stories connect with audiences and has spent his career helping creative talent produce its best work. He said Rice’s appointment would support Netflix as it grows and continues delivering stories to members.

Audience retention is part of the wider concern

The executive overhaul comes after Netflix’s stock price fell over the previous year and following reporting that examined difficulties in the company’s programming strategy. Several major television successes reportedly lose more than half their audience after their first season, including Avatar: The Last Airbender, Beef and One Piece.

For viewers, the changes may eventually affect which films and series receive investment, how long shows are supported and how Netflix balances established franchises with new ideas. The company’s next phase will be shaped by Rice’s arrival, the future of the film division and the performance of the projects already in production.
