A new rumour suggests Disney is exploring a third modern Star Wars Battlefront game, with Bungie and EA DICE reportedly among the studios being considered. There is no confirmation that development has started.

The claim surfaced through a forthcoming issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, produced as part of the Electronic Gaming Monthly Compendium Kickstarter campaign. The campaign passed $1.7 million in pledges during 2024, activating a stretch goal for a new 265th issue featuring former staff members and other industry contributors.
What the Battlefront 3 rumour says

The new issue is expected to include reviews and a return of the magazine’s Quarterman rumour column. During a Game Mess Mornings discussion, journalist Jeff Grubb described the report as evidence that Disney and Lucasfilm are looking for a development partner.
The report says EA DICE would be the obvious candidate, given its work on the two current-generation Battlefront games. It also names Bungie as an alternative. Bungie is known for Halo, Destiny and Marathon, but the rumour does not indicate that either studio has formally accepted the project.
The available information points to early conversations about a potential developer, rather than a game already in production.
Who is Quarterman?

Quarterman was a pen name used by the news editor at the time. Grubb did not clarify whether he personally contributed the report under that name, and he stressed that the project may not yet exist beyond discussions about who could make it.
The history behind a third Battlefront
EA DICE released Star Wars Battlefront in 2015 for PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. It focused largely on characters, vehicles and locations from George Lucas’ original trilogy. The 2017 follow-up, Star Wars Battlefront 2, broadened the setting to include the Clone Wars and the sequel trilogy era.

Earlier, LucasArts and Pandemic made the similarly titled Star Wars: Battlefront and Star Wars: Battlefront 2. Free Radical Design began work on a third entry in that series, but the project was cancelled. Unauthorised and incomplete versions later circulated, including a Wii build.

Why the rumour needs context

Electronic Arts’ exclusive Star Wars game licence expired in 2023, although the publisher is still developing a new Star Wars Jedi game with Respawn Entertainment. EA DICE is supporting Battlefield 6, while Bungie is working on Marathon and the return of Destiny 2. Those commitments make either studio’s availability uncertain.
Bungie does have a recent connection to the franchise: in December, it released Destiny 2: Renegades, an official Star Wars-themed expansion.

Interest in Battlefront 2 remains high, and renewed attention around the game has strengthened the case for another large-scale Star Wars shooter. That makes a new entry commercially attractive for Disney, but the current report is still only a rumour.
Until Disney, Lucasfilm, EA, Bungie or another developer announces a project, Star Wars Battlefront 3 should be treated as unconfirmed. Fans looking for a physical gaming centrepiece can browse arcade machines or consider arcade light guns for shooter-focused play.
