Maeda is prioritising creative work

In its announcement, Visual Arts said Maeda chose palliative care rather than chemotherapy so he could conserve his strength and continue his creative work. At the time of his diagnosis, he was contributing to the free-to-play mobile RPG Heaven Burns Red and developing an unnamed music project.

The news is significant for fans who follow the history of Japanese visual novels, a subject covered alongside wider arcade and gaming news on RETROCADE. Maeda’s work has also helped shape the anime and game culture surrounding story-driven Japanese releases.

A defining career in visual novels and anime

Maeda wrote the principal scenarios for several influential visual novels, including Kanon, Air and Clannad. Each later received an anime adaptation, bringing his emotionally intense storytelling to a much wider audience and establishing these titles as important works within the “moe” tradition in the West.

He also created the story for Angel Beats!, another anime recognised for its focus on loss, friendship and emotional drama. In addition to writing, Maeda composed music for many of his projects. He wrote the lyrics for “Tori No Uta”, the theme song for the Air anime; the song remains closely associated with the series and is available to hear here: Tori No Uta.

For readers exploring how interactive entertainment has developed across different formats, RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide offers a separate look at the hardware side of gaming history.

Fans can send messages of support

Visual Arts has provided contact details for fans who wish to send Maeda words of encouragement. The publisher said his work on Heaven Burns Red is complete through chapter six, while its statement indicates that he intends to keep writing and composing for as long as possible.

Maeda is currently hospitalised, but Visual Arts said he remains determined to continue creating. His career spans visual novels, anime and music, with works that continue to connect games and other forms of Japanese popular entertainment.

That relationship between games, sound and dedicated hardware is also reflected in RETROCADE’s broader collection of arcade machines and arcade parts.
