Rockstar Games has released a new 90-second trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6, featuring military backstory, an intimate shower scene, Jason throwing a man from a boat and the familiar character who says “Grand Theft Auto”. One detail, however, has dominated the reaction: the trailer’s noticeably blurred visual style.
Some viewers initially assumed the soft, smudged look was an internet joke. Others are taking it seriously, comparing the latest footage with earlier trailers and questioning whether the game’s graphics have been downgraded before launch.
One comparison asked whether the new footage represented an upgrade or a downgrade.
A separate post compared the 2023 trailer with the 2026 launch trailer.
The hazy presentation is most likely an image-processing effect rather than evidence that the underlying game has suddenly become less detailed. In film and graphics terminology, the appearance resembles a Gaussian blur: a filter that softens image detail and edges.
Another comparison examined similar scenes from the first two trailers alongside the latest launch trailer.
There is little reason to assume Rockstar would deliberately promote a weaker-looking version of one of the most anticipated games ever made. The trailer may simply be using a stylised presentation for marketing purposes, so cancelling a digital preorder over the footage would be premature.
Players have also pointed out that the effect could become an optional setting. Red Dead Redemption II included several visual filters, making it plausible that Grand Theft Auto 6 could offer similar control rather than forcing the look on everyone.
Until Rockstar explains the effect or shows more unfiltered gameplay, the safest conclusion is that the blurry appearance is a deliberate visual choice—not proof of a technical downgrade.
