True Detective Season 5 is taking shape, with Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas confirmed as its central stars. The new season will also move the crime anthology to Jamaica Bay in New York.

What we know about True Detective Season 5
The crime drama has built its reputation by giving each season a new mystery, location and detective partnership. Its influence has reached other modern television crime stories, including DC Studios’ Lanterns.
The most recent season premiered in 2024 and featured Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. However, the first season remains the benchmark for many viewers, largely because of the acclaimed pairing of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
Season 5 has the ingredients for a very different partnership. Cage will play Henry Logan, while Banderas has been cast as Rai García. Further details about their roles have not been revealed, although the two characters are expected to be the detectives at the centre of the new investigation.
A new setting in New York
The story will take place around Jamaica Bay, an area of Long Island in New York. That setting gives the series a fresh environment for its next high-stakes mystery, following the distinct locations used by previous seasons.
Production is scheduled to begin in 2027. Issa López, who served as showrunner for Season 4, is returning to write, direct and executive produce the fifth instalment.

When will Season 5 be released?
There is no official release date yet. The eventual streaming home is also unclear while Skydance’s potential merger of Paramount Plus and HBO Max remains part of the wider industry picture.
With filming expected to start in 2027, a 2028 premiere appears possible, although that timing has not been confirmed. For now, the casting of Cage and Banderas is the clearest indication of where the anthology is heading next.
