The Terminator is currently available to watch free on YouTube with ads, although its availability may change. More than four decades after its release, James Cameron’s 1984 film remains a tense, influential blend of science fiction, action and horror.

A time-travel thriller with a simple, effective premise

Set partly in Los Angeles in 1984 and partly in a devastated 2029, the film follows two visitors from the future. One is a machine covered in living tissue: the Terminator, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Its mission is to kill Sarah Connor, portrayed by Linda Hamilton, before she can give birth to her son.

In the future, machines control the world and humanity is fighting back. Sarah’s unborn child, John Connor, will eventually lead the human resistance. The machines therefore send the Terminator into the past to remove him from history before he is born.

The second time traveller is Kyle Reese, played by Michael Biehn. Reese is a trusted resistance soldier sent back by John Connor to protect Sarah from the machine hunting her.

The Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s most intimidating performance

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is often considered the more entertaining film. Its explosive set pieces, inventive effects and larger-than-life action made it a defining blockbuster, while Schwarzenegger’s reprogrammed Terminator became a heroic and surprisingly charming protector of John Connor.

The original film takes a very different approach. Schwarzenegger’s Terminator is silent, emotionless and relentlessly purposeful. His imposing physique and square jaw make him immediately convincing as a machine, but the performance’s real strength is its restraint. There is no warmth or comic relief to soften the character: he simply advances on his target.

That controlled performance helped establish Schwarzenegger as a major star. Rather than presenting the Terminator as a conventional villain, the film makes him feel like an unstoppable force that has entered the story from another, far more dangerous world.

The Terminator has the structure of a slasher film

Alongside its time-travel ideas, shootouts and car chases, The Terminator borrows heavily from slasher cinema. Like Michael Myers in Halloween, its antagonist keeps returning after seemingly decisive attacks. Weapons and obstacles may slow him down, but they do not change his objective.

Cameron and co-writer Gale Anne Hurd have discussed the influence of John Carpenter and Halloween, describing their own film as a low-budget slasher movie. That influence is visible in the way the Terminator stalks Sarah, turning ordinary locations into places of growing danger.

The film is also quieter and more measured than its sequel. Some of the sequences depicting the ruined future linger longer than necessary, but the slower rhythm gives the pursuit room to build suspense. Terminator 2 is bigger and more immediately fun; the 1984 original is considerably more frightening.

The Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger

A film that broadened science fiction

The Terminator was a major success when it was released. It established Cameron and Schwarzenegger as leading names and helped expand expectations for science fiction at the cinema. The genre could be serious, adult-focused and built around a high-concept idea without sacrificing momentum or accessibility.

Its relationship with Terminator 2 also resembles the evolution of Cameron’s work on the Alien films. Ridley Scott’s 1979 original is a science-fiction horror story about an alien hunting a spaceship crew one by one. Cameron’s 1986 sequel, Aliens, shifts towards military action as Ellen Ripley and a group of soldiers face a much larger threat.

The first two Terminator films follow a similar path. The original leans into horror, isolation and pursuit, while its sequel turns the concept into a louder, more expansive action adventure. Both films are essential for different reasons, but the success of the sequel should not obscure what the first achieved.

Why it still matters to arcade fans

The film’s clean visual language, mechanical villain and high-stakes pursuit have had a lasting influence on games and arcade culture. Its mix of futuristic technology, firearms and relentless enemies also fits naturally beside classic light-gun shooters and other action machines.

Whether you are revisiting it after watching Terminator 2 or seeing it for the first time, The Terminator remains a sharply constructed sci-fi thriller. Its free, ad-supported YouTube availability makes this a timely opportunity to watch the film that started it all—while it lasts.
