Street Fighter is now in cinemas, and its credits include a brief animated sequence that points towards a possible sequel. This article contains spoilers for the film’s mid-credits scene.

Spoiler Warning

Animation appears several times in Street Fighter, but it is primarily used for flashbacks. The mid-credits sequence changes that approach by depicting events after the film’s street fights have ended.

What happens in the Street Fighter post-credits scene?

Sagat is shown training furiously after losing to Ryu in the first World Warrior tournament. The opening of the film establishes Sagat as Ryu’s final opponent in that competition, and the new scene makes clear that the defeat has not ended their rivalry.

During Sagat’s training, M. Bison, Vega, Cammy and Juli appear. Their presence suggests they are attempting to bring Sagat into their campaign of villainy, although the scene does not show whether he accepts their offer.

Why is the scene animated?

The film does not appear to have cast a live-action actor as Sagat at this stage. Even the character’s training sounds do not seem to have an associated performer credit. Using animation allows the film to introduce Sagat’s future role without committing to a specific actor.

That choice also gives the sequel setup a clear purpose: Sagat can return as Ryu’s rival in a later live-action instalment, should the character be developed for the next film.

What does it mean for a sequel?

The film leaves its central conflict open. Akuma arrives late in the story and takes over the main villain position from M. Bison, while the mid-credits scene adds another unresolved thread through Sagat’s possible recruitment.

There is therefore plenty of space for a follow-up, but a sequel depends on whether Street Fighter performs well enough to receive approval. Fans following the wider arcade news and gaming coverage can also revisit the series’ roots through classic arcade machines.
