Battlefield 6 is available to play at no cost on Steam for a limited time, giving PC players an opportunity to sample EA’s military shooter as Season 5 begins.

The free trial runs until 20 October. It includes access to every multiplayer map and mode, allowing players to experience the current game before deciding whether to purchase it.
What Battlefield 6 Season 5 adds
Season 5 launched on 13 October with a substantial multiplayer update. New content includes maps, six weapons, two vehicles and Rapid Royale, a quicker battle royale mode that is free to play.
The season also previews a limited-time Halloween event drawing on EA’s Dead Space series. Promotional footage shows soldiers wearing armour influenced by protagonist Isaac Clarke, alongside a brief look at the franchise’s unsettling alien Markers. EA has not yet shared many details about the crossover.

Players who want to continue after the trial can purchase the Battlefield 6 Standard Edition at a temporary discount. Steam lists it at $27.99, reduced by 60 per cent from $69.99, with the offer running until 20 October.

Players question Season 5 cosmetics
The new season has also attracted criticism over battle pass cosmetics. Some players believe that certain character designs may have been made with generative AI, although EA has not confirmed that claim.
Examples discussed by players include a soldier carrying five apparently identical pistols and another character with an arm patch that spells “security” as “secuty”. The design of some ammunition magazines has also been questioned. These apparent mistakes have increased frustration about questionable cosmetics appearing in paid battle pass content.

The debate follows earlier complaints about suspected AI-generated artwork in the game. It remains unclear whether generative AI was used for the latest designs, leaving the issue unresolved while adding to the mixed response to Season 5.
Battlefield is also heading to cinemas
The franchise is expanding beyond interactive entertainment, with Sony Pictures reportedly securing the rights to a film adaptation. Christopher McQuarrie, director of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, is attached to direct, while Sinners star Michael B. Jordan is attached to lead the cast.
No plot details or release date have been announced. In the meantime, the Steam trial provides a straightforward way to test Battlefield 6 before committing to the discounted Standard Edition.
