After a comparatively quiet 2026 for Japanese role-playing games, aside from Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, 2027 is shaping up to be packed with major releases. Final Fantasy, Persona and Kingdom Hearts all feature prominently, alongside a new action-adventure from the studio behind Yakuza. Some games have confirmed launch dates, while others are currently targeting the broader 2027 window and may arrive later in the year.

Stranger Than Heaven
Release date: 15 January 2027
RGG Studio describes Stranger Than Heaven as an action-adventure, but its substantial narrative, exploration and side content should appeal strongly to RPG fans. Its combat is expected to be more demanding and intricate than the straightforward action of Yakuza or the turn-based battles of Like a Dragon. The game follows a sweeping story spanning five decades and includes appearances from Tupac and Snoop Dogg.
Persona 4 Revival
Release date: 18 February 2027
Persona 4 Revival returns to the rural town of Inaba, a change of pace from the metropolitan settings commonly associated with the series. Players take the role of a transfer student who must manage school, friendships and personal development during the day, then investigate strange events at night.
The central mystery concerns the Midnight Channel, a television broadcast that appears on rainy nights and may be connected to a string of murders. The remake retains the original’s supernatural investigation, distinctive music, dramatic twists and memorable group of characters while giving the game a substantial visual update. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation
Release date: 8 April 2027
Square Enix is scheduled to complete its ambitious Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy in the year of the original PlayStation game’s 30th anniversary. Revelation expands the adventure with open-world gameplay and the Highwind airship, while early footage has shown the opening sequence and teased Cloud’s eventual understanding of the events surrounding Nibelheim five years earlier.
The previous chapters, Remake and Rebirth, introduced significant changes to the familiar story and filled their worlds with minigames and optional activities. The trilogy’s conclusion is expected to continue that approach.

Kingdom Hearts 4
Release date: To be confirmed in 2027
Sora’s return arrives after an eight-year wait. Following limited information since 2022, a June Nintendo Direct provided the first substantial look at the sequel, followed by another trailer at Disney’s biennial D23 conference in August.
The D23 footage revealed that Pixar’s Coco will inspire one of the game’s worlds and showed gameplay featuring Goofy, Mickey and Donald. Further information is expected after the release of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, potentially during the following summer.

Xenoblade Genesis
Release date: To be confirmed in 2027
Xenoblade Genesis was unveiled during the same Nintendo Direct as Kingdom Hearts 4. Developed by Monolith Soft, it is a Switch 2 exclusive and a new entry in the series.
The debut trailer offered only a small amount of gameplay but introduced important story details. An elite academy trains young warriors to use a force called Anima. Special weapons can amplify that power while also recording their users’ thoughts, suggesting that the technology may carry serious consequences. The trailer also showcased the series’ expansive landscapes and striking character designs. Nintendo typically does not reveal first- or second-party projects too far ahead, so more information may arrive in a winter or spring Direct.
Persona 6
Release date: To be confirmed in 2027
A decade has passed since Persona 5 launched in Japan, and fans finally received the first official glimpse of its successor during the June Xbox Games Showcase. The teaser was brief but established an unsettling tone: a rainy graveyard, static, thunder, mechanical sounds and a headless human statue lead into rapid images of magazine-cut facial features, pointing fingers and apparent neural activity.
Although the footage revealed very little, it confirmed that the project is active. A larger presentation may follow the launch of Persona 4 Revival. Until then, fans can keep an eye on the arcade machine buying guide when planning a gaming room built around their favourite Japanese titles.
