The official South Park Discord server has been shut down immediately after its volunteer moderation team said communication with South Park Digital Studios and Paramount had effectively collapsed.

In a closure announcement, the moderators explained that contact had fallen from weekly discussions to gaps of six months or more during the past two years. They said the companies had left volunteers responsible for managing an official community without reliable support.

“Paramount and South Park Digital Studios have effectively put us in charge of their official property and left us to manage it without consistent support,” the moderators wrote.

The shutdown arrives as online communities continue to influence how fans interact with major entertainment properties. For readers interested in the wider gaming and arcade world, RETROCADE’s Arcade Blog covers related industry and gaming news.

A change to Discord’s bot policies was another immediate problem. One of the server’s moderation bots stopped working, and restoring it required personal information. Because the volunteer team had previously faced doxxing incidents, its members did not believe supplying those details was appropriate.

The moderators contacted Paramount for help, arguing that the property owner should complete the verification process. They said no response arrived.

“We felt […] Paramount, as the owner, should’ve completed this process. We received no response,” the announcement said.

The recent Paramount and Skydance merger, completed the previous week, made the search for a suitable company contact even more difficult. The moderators said they had exhausted their available options and could no longer find a workable route to support.

The Discord closure is one of several events associated with the merger that have attracted attention. Another involved a large leak of Cartoon Network material, including more than 200 gigabytes of show bibles, background and character artwork, storyboards, production guides and other files. The leak was described in a recent massive leak of Cartoon Network data.

KFC Spain assembled a video using material from the leak, but it was quickly removed. The takedown may have followed DMCA notices issued by Skydance, although some X accounts retained the video.

Earlier in the year, an Avatar Aang film also leaked. A later investigation resulted in the arrest of a potential suspect, but that incident was reportedly not attributed to Paramount.

The moderators said the South Park server could potentially return if Paramount makes contact. Until then, the community has been locked because replacing the bot would require considerable effort and expense.

They also stressed that the team members were unpaid fans rather than employees of South Park Digital Studios, Skydance or Comedy Central.

“It is important to remember that we are volunteers who have chosen to do this for the community for free. We are not South Park Digital Studios, Skydance, or Comedy Central staff. We are simply South Park fans.”

For communities built around physical games and hardware, dependable moderation and maintenance matter too.
