Pikmin 4 returns one week before GTA 6

Nintendo is placing a bright, strategic adventure directly ahead of one of the biggest game launches in years. Pikmin 4: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy is scheduled to arrive on 12 November 2026, seven days before Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on 19 November.

That timing is unusual, but the two games are aimed at very different audiences. One is a cheerful real-time strategy adventure about exploring, collecting and commanding tiny plant-like creatures. The other is a major open-world crime game expected to dominate attention when it arrives.

What is Pikmin 4?

Originally released for Nintendo Switch on 21 July 2023, Pikmin 4 is the fourth main entry in Nintendo’s series. The game follows an astronaut stranded on an Earth-like planet, where survival depends on working with a colourful collection of small creatures.

The series has never reached the same mainstream heights as Super Mario or The Legend of Zelda, yet it has built a loyal audience. Its appeal comes from the combination of exploration, resource management, gentle humour and the need to carefully plan every move.

Switch 2 improvements and new features

The updated edition adds several features designed for Nintendo’s newer hardware:

  • Improved visuals for Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Voice commands for Oatchi, the friendly space dog introduced in Pikmin 4.
  • New exams to tackle at Dandori Academy.
  • GameShare support for Dandori Battles, allowing friends to play even when they do not own the game.

Dandori Battles turn the game’s emphasis on organisation and efficiency into competitive split-screen challenges. Players race to complete objectives and manage their Pikmin more effectively than their opponent.

Existing owners can upgrade

Players who already own the original Switch version will not need to purchase the complete game again. An upgrade pack is priced at $9.99, giving existing owners access to the Switch 2 improvements and additional content.

The low-cost upgrade also makes it easier for returning players to join friends for Dandori Battles. Friends without their own copy can participate through GameShare, while players who want to practise independently can purchase the full edition.

A very different November release schedule

Grand Theft Auto 6 is due on 19 November, after years of anticipation. Nintendo’s release arrives just one week earlier, while The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is scheduled for 5 November, two weeks before the Rockstar release.

That gives players several very different ways to spend November: a nostalgic return to Hyrule, a massive open-world crime adventure, or a more relaxed strategy game centred on exploration and teamwork. Pikmin 4 is not trying to compete with GTA 6 on tone or scale, but its timing ensures Nintendo has a notable release in the same crowded window.

Why the timing makes sense

Launching a family-friendly strategy game immediately before a blockbuster action title may seem bold. However, the contrast between the two releases could help them appeal to separate groups of players rather than forcing a direct contest.

For Australian gamers planning a busy end to 2026, Pikmin 4: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy will be available on 12 November, followed by Grand Theft Auto 6 on 19 November. The result is a packed fortnight for players with very different tastes.
