Faith arrives as Buffy’s dangerous opposite

Being Buffy Summers is never simple. As the Slayer, she carries extraordinary power and an enormous responsibility, while trying to live a normal teenage life in Sunnydale. Across Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s seven seasons, Buffy repeatedly confronts the darker impulses that come with her supernatural role.

The series often explores those conflicts through characters who act as contrasts to Buffy. Cordelia begins as a symbol of carefree adolescence before becoming a more complicated member of the Scooby Gang. Kendra, meanwhile, is another Slayer whose strict adherence to the rules exposes a different weakness.

Faith Lehane is the most significant of these foils. Played by Eliza Dushku, she first appears in the season 3 episode “Faith, Hope & Trick”, which originally aired 28 years ago. Her introduction presents a Slayer who enjoys the violence and freedom of the job in ways Buffy never fully allows herself to do.

A spectacular first appearance

At the Bronze, Buffy notices a vampire leading a young woman outside. Buffy is ready to intervene, but the stranger kills the vampire with ease. She then reveals herself as Faith, a newly arrived Slayer.

Most of the group immediately warms to Faith. Buffy is less enthusiastic about gaining a partner, and a later patrol gives her good reason to be cautious. When several vampires attack, Faith concentrates on overpowering one opponent rather than helping Buffy with the others. She appears to enjoy the fight, making it clear that teamwork is not her priority.

That encounter establishes Faith’s defining traits: she is impulsive, volatile and willing to act before considering the consequences. Her confidence is attractive, but it also hints at private motives and an unstable relationship with the Slayer’s moral responsibility.

Faith becomes Buffy’s dark reflection

Buffy and Faith eventually pursue Kakistos, an ancient vampire who has arrived in Sunnydale after killing Faith’s former Watcher. Faith gets her revenge, although Kakistos’s henchman, Mr. Trick, escapes. He later becomes an important ally to season 3’s central villain.

The episode contains several other major developments, including Buffy’s attempt to deal with what happened to Angel at the end of season 2. Even so, Faith dominates the story. At first, she seems positioned to fill the gap left by Kendra after her death in season 2. Her real purpose is more challenging: she forces Buffy to question what being the Slayer truly means.

Faith treats slaying less like a moral duty and more like an exhilarating release. Buffy also feels anger, fear and the thrill of power, but she remains connected to friends who help restrain those emotions. Faith has not had that same support. Her isolation leaves her more exposed to the ruthless side of the work.

In that sense, Faith functions as Buffy’s psychological shadow: she embodies the choices Buffy could make if responsibility, compassion and community stopped mattering. Her later turn towards villainy is therefore not an abrupt change, but the logical continuation of the warning built into her first episode.

The episode also helps Buffy move forward

Faith’s arrival gives Buffy a new perspective on her own grief. After speaking about her final night with Angel, Buffy tells Giles that she had been holding onto those feelings for a long time and that releasing them felt good.

That relief does not last. Angel’s return creates another painful test for Buffy, ensuring that the emotional conflict surrounding her former love remains central to the season. Faith, however, has already changed the balance of the story. She is not simply another ally or replacement Slayer; she is a warning about what Buffy might become.
