The gap between 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto 6 has been unusually long. Rockstar now says players should not expect another wait of almost a decade after its next release.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Rockstar development leads Rob Nelson, Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut discussed the lengthy and costly production of Grand Theft Auto 6. The conversation covered the game’s delays, allegations of union-busting and the multiple leaks that affected development.
The developers also explained how the studio handled the game’s enormous scale, and how the tools and experience gained during production could support its next project.
Rockstar wants to build on GTA 6’s technology
Hooker and Garbut said the extended development period gave Rockstar time to improve its working methods. Rather than discard those improvements when GTA 6 is complete, the studio intends to carry its engine, tools and production knowledge into future work.
That could let Rockstar create new content more efficiently and expand its ideas in different directions instead of simply making each project larger. Garbut said the studio made fundamental changes during GTA 6 development, but does not intend to dismantle that foundation once the game is finished.
For readers who follow the wider arcade news cycle, the lesson is familiar: long-running technology investments can shape what comes next. The same principle applies when choosing an arcade machine or planning future upgrades.
Could the next Rockstar game arrive sooner?
The interview compares Rockstar’s current approach with its faster output during the early 2000s. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City followed Grand Theft Auto III after one year because it was built on the earlier game’s foundations.
That history does not mean a new Rockstar release should be expected in 2027. Most major studios no longer work to an annual release schedule, and there is no announced timetable for the company’s next game.
Still, a more mature engine and established production pipeline could have practical benefits. Major updates for GTA 6 may be easier to deliver, while Rockstar’s next large-scale project might require less time than the crime drama starring Jason and Lucia.
When is GTA 6 scheduled to launch?
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19. Until Rockstar provides details about its next project, the clearest takeaway is that the studio believes the systems created for GTA 6 can shorten future development without abandoning the scale and ambition associated with its games.
