Microsoft is adding a compact option to its Xbox controller range, with the Xbox Nano controller arriving in early November. It retains the inputs of a full-size Xbox pad while costing $15 less and measuring almost half the size.

A compact Xbox controller for smaller hands

The Xbox Nano is designed for younger players, people with smaller hands and anyone who wants a more portable controller. Microsoft says the device is just over 5 inches long and weighs 3.5 ounces, making it lighter and shorter than most modern smartphones.

Despite its reduced dimensions, the Nano includes all 18 standard gameplay inputs found on a regular Xbox controller. The launch price is $50, placing it below the cost of the standard-sized model described in the announcement.

For players comparing compact gaming setups, the Nano could sit neatly alongside a compact arcade cabinet or other space-conscious equipment. RETROCADE’s arcade news coverage also follows the hardware changes shaping modern game rooms.

Built-in battery instead of AA cells

One of the Xbox Nano’s most notable differences is its power system. Rather than relying on AA batteries, it has a built-in rechargeable battery, removing the need to keep replacement cells on hand or buy a separate rechargeable pack.

The controller is being promoted for games such as Minecraft Dungeons 2, as well as streaming games to a PC or television. However, there is no indication that it includes dedicated cloud-gaming hardware intended to reduce latency.

Its design closely resembles an Xbox cloud-gaming controller that leaked earlier in 2026 and was reportedly cancelled. The Nano therefore looks familiar, but its confirmed features focus on size, standard controls and integrated charging rather than specialised cloud functionality.

Launch colour and promotional bundle

At launch, the Xbox Nano appears to be available only in white. That is a relatively restrained choice for a controller range known for offering more adventurous colours; a translucent green version would be a particularly fitting addition.

For a limited time, new members who purchase a new Samsung TV or Oculus headset can receive the Nano controller together with a two-month Game Pass Ultimate subscription. The offer is tied to those purchases and applies to new members.

Microsoft has outlined the controller’s specifications and positioning in the Xbox Wire blog post. Anyone planning a dedicated gaming space can also compare options in RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide or browse arcade parts and controls for other input hardware.
