Production work is already progressing, with scripts in development and key crew members being hired. Universal Global Television scripted series chief Kelsey Balance shared the update during a New York Comic Con panel, saying the project remains on track to enter production next year. Variety also reported that further news is expected shortly.

Balance indicated that more information could arrive within the next few weeks as the production team settles additional details. A premiere date has not yet been announced.

What is the Dungeon Crawler Carl TV series about?

The story begins when an alien invasion destroys most of humanity. Coast Guard veteran Carl and Princess Donut, the prize-winning cat belonging to Carl’s former girlfriend, are left to survive a deadly dungeon filled with monsters, aliens and other dangers.

The dungeon is also part of a cruel intergalactic reality show. Its contestants must fight to stay alive while their ordeal is broadcast, making survival only one element of the wider spectacle. The books combine fantasy, science fiction, dark comedy and video game-inspired systems, including the progression and challenges associated with LitRPG storytelling.

Chris Yost and Eric Heisserer are attached to lead the series. Executive producers include Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins and Rachel Hargreaves-Heald from MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door production company. Dinniman will serve as a co-executive producer.

It is not yet clear how closely the television adaptation will follow the novels. That question will likely become easier to answer once the production reveals more about its structure, characters and approach to the books’ game-like mechanics. Who has been cast in Dungeon Crawler Carl?

Casting remains limited at this stage. Matt Dinniman confirmed that Jeff Hays, the narrator of the Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks, will provide the voice of Princess Donut in the television series.

Carl has not been cast, and the production has not announced a release date. Dinniman said the role requires an actor who can convincingly handle Carl’s comedic side as well as his more threatening moments.

What happens next?

For now, the project is in preparation rather than active filming. The next expected updates may clarify the remaining creative team, additional casting and the production’s plans for adapting the novels’ dungeon setting and unusual mix of humour, danger and game-inspired rules.

The series’ premise also has obvious appeal for fans of arcade-style progression, high-stakes challenges and visually distinctive worlds.
