Henry Cavill remains attached to Amazon’s live-action Warhammer 40,000 series, with horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan now set to lead the adaptation alongside United Artists.

Mike Flanagan will shape the Warhammer 40,000 adaptation
Games Workshop chief executive Kevin Rountree confirmed the creative development in the company’s July financial report. Amazon has appointed United Artists and Flanagan to work on the project, and initial outlines have been completed. The report says Flanagan is expected to move on to scripting soon.
Games Workshop’s financial report is available as a Games Workshop financial report.

Flanagan brings considerable experience adapting dark and supernatural material. His credits include Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, along with Netflix series including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher. His upcoming work also includes Prime Video’s Carrie adaptation and DC Studios’ Clayface.
Henry Cavill is still attached to the series
The setting offers Flanagan a vast science-fiction horror canvas. In the far future, humanity’s expansion across the universe has brought conflict with aliens, cosmic threats and other dangers. The tone is famously bleak, making a horror specialist a notable choice for the first live-action Warhammer 40,000 adaptation.
Cavill is a major fan of the tabletop universe, and the Games Workshop report confirms that he remains connected to the project. No release date, cast details beyond Cavill, or production schedule has been announced.

Prime Video’s Warhammer 40,000 project may take years
Games Workshop has not provided a timeline for the live-action production. Its report warns that these adaptations will take years to reach audiences successfully. The plural wording also suggests that the Amazon partnership could eventually deliver more than one film or series, although specific formats have not been confirmed.
For enthusiasts following the wider franchise, the company also outlined several animated projects:
- A second Secret Level episode is nearly complete, but it will be set in the Age of Sigmar universe rather than Warhammer 40,000.
- A full animated Warhammer 40,000 series focused on Space Marines and Deathwatch is in development.
- John Orloff will write the Deathwatch series, with Blur returning to animate it for release through Amazon.

The announcement gives Games Workshop fans several screen projects to track, although the live-action series remains a long-term prospect. Its grim future, alien threats and heavily established lore will present a substantial adaptation challenge for Flanagan, Cavill and Amazon.
