Littlefinger’s Best Game of Thrones Quote Still Lands

Spoilers for all eight seasons of Game of Thrones.

Great fantasy dramas are often remembered through their dialogue. “Winter is coming” and “Power is power” remain instantly recognisable, but Petyr Baelish—better known as Littlefinger—offers a quieter line that may explain the entire series.

Played by Aidan Gillen, Littlefinger is a soft-spoken political operator who rises from a minor noble house to become Master of Coin during Robert Baratheon’s reign. He thrives by identifying what people want, then using those desires against them.

His schemes help trigger the War of the Five Kings and contribute to Ned Stark’s execution after Littlefinger betrays Ned’s trust in King’s Landing. He also exploits Lysa Arryn’s hunger for love and influence, manipulating her into poisoning her husband.

Littlefinger’s best quote

The line appears in season 3, episode 5, “Kissed by Fire”, during a conversation between Littlefinger and Sansa Stark:

“It doesn’t matter what we want. Once we get it, then we want something else.”

It may not be Littlefinger’s most famous remark—that distinction is often given to “knowledge is power”—but it is arguably his most revealing. The sentence describes the restless ambition driving many of the show’s central characters.

How the quote explains Game of Thrones

The series is filled with characters pursuing something they believe will complete their lives. Once they obtain it, however, their goal changes or expands. Daenerys Targaryen provides one of the clearest examples.

Daenerys initially longs for a home and a sense of belonging. She finds both as her relationship with Khal Drogo develops and she becomes part of Dothraki life. Later, after seeing injustice across Westeros and learning more about the political world, she turns her attention to ruling the Seven Kingdoms.

Even affection and loyalty cannot permanently satisfy that ambition. Daenerys gains allies, love and a place that feels like home, yet the Iron Throne becomes the objective that matters most. Her pursuit ultimately ends in tragedy.

Cersei Lannister follows a similarly complicated path. Her relationship with Jaime matters deeply, but protecting her children’s claim and securing political power becomes more urgent. After Tommen’s death, she takes the throne herself, only to find that authority brings isolation and growing opposition.

When Cersei has achieved power but loses so much else, her desire for Jaime becomes prominent again. The Lannister story therefore reflects the quote’s central idea: possession does not end longing; it often redirects it.

Littlefinger is trapped by his own philosophy

Littlefinger’s outlook is especially cynical because he has spent his life being dismissed by more powerful families. He understands how the nobility look down on people they consider lesser, and he responds by pursuing influence wherever he can find it.

His ambition is obvious, but power is not the only thing he wants. Littlefinger also carries a long-standing love for Catelyn Stark, whom he knew while growing up at Riverrun.

When he asked for Catelyn’s hand, she rejected him and soon became betrothed to Brandon Stark, Ned’s elder brother and a member of a far more powerful house. A duel ended in humiliation for Littlefinger, but his feelings did not disappear. They hardened into a desire for status and control.

Power offered Littlefinger a way to take what he could not earn through affection. That makes his statement about wanting something new particularly revealing: he recognises the pattern in everyone else, while remaining caught inside it himself.

A line that mirrors the whole series

Littlefinger’s quote works because it applies to heroes, villains and minor players alike. Ambition continually collides with human attachment, and very few characters are content to keep what they already have.

That same tension is central to the appeal of interactive entertainment. A well-designed virtual pinball machine or arcade cabinet turns simple goals into a cycle of achievement, challenge and renewed pursuit—an idea familiar to anyone who enjoys games built around chasing a higher score.

In the end, the line is memorable not because it celebrates ambition, but because it exposes its cost. Littlefinger sees that people rarely stop wanting more, yet his own rise shows how destructive that cycle can become.

Across eight seasons, Game of Thrones repeatedly asks whether power, love, safety or revenge can ever be enough. Littlefinger’s answer is bleak: once desire is satisfied, another want is already waiting.
