Blizzard plans to make the controversial Skyborne race in World of Warcraft: Forever look more like the older, rougher models used throughout the rest of the game. Although the change technically reduces their visual polish, player reaction has been broadly positive.
In a blog post, Blizzard confirmed that the update is planned for early 2027. It will revise the Skyborne’s standard-definition character models, along with both the standard-definition and high-definition versions of every Druid animal form.

Why the Skyborne look out of place
World of Warcraft: Forever draws heavily on the original vanilla game, including its angular geometry, pronounced textures and deliberately old-school character designs. The project does add modern lighting, water effects and other visual improvements, while still retaining a retro presentation. Players can also enable HD character models if they want a more contemporary appearance.
The Skyborne currently clash with that visual direction. Their colours are unusually bright, their surfaces are smoother and they lack the sharper edges and heavier texturing seen on older characters. The difference is especially obvious when the Skyborne are displayed beside standard-definition orcs, tauren and trolls in Orgrimmar.
There is an additional problem: the Skyborne currently have an HD model but no standard-definition version. As a result, anyone using the game’s SD graphics can see their Skyborne character looking conspicuously modern among the surrounding characters.
The contrast with a night elf makes the difference clear:

A tauren provides another useful comparison:

These characters do not simply look more detailed; they belong to a noticeably different visual style. Blizzard’s planned rework is intended to bring the Skyborne closer to the rest of the game’s presentation.
Druid forms are receiving the same treatment
Druid animal forms are also affected. They currently lack standard-definition options, and even their HD versions stand out sharply against the game’s older character models. Blizzard has shown an early look at the planned changes.

A change prompted by player feedback
Player response to the announcement has been mixed, but much of it has been favourable. Some players dislike the idea of making the models look “worse”, while others remain unhappy that the Skyborne exist in the game at all. However, many welcome a more consistent art direction, including players who are not fans of the race itself.

The timing means the revised models will arrive months after the game’s November launch. Even so, the update forms part of a broader effort to address criticism of the Skyborne, covering their appearance, their inclusion in the game and the decision not to use regular Highborne elves instead.
In a recent interview, Blizzard explained that the race was partly created to bring back the underused Air Elemental architectural style. The developers also said that making the Skyborne available across factions was intended to avoid pushing too many players towards one side, a problem associated with the introduction of Blood Elves in The Burning Crusade. The developers discussed those choices telling TechRadar.
Visual consistency matters in any game built around a strong art style, whether it is an online world or a carefully assembled arcade collection. For players who prefer the game’s SD presentation, making the Skyborne less polished may ultimately make them feel more authentic.
It is a useful reminder when comparing screens, cabinets and classic-style games: a higher-resolution asset is not automatically a better fit. The right choice depends on how well it matches the rest of the experience, much like choosing an arcade machine buying guide before selecting a cabinet for your space.
For now, Skyborne players will need to wait until early 2027 for the models to better match the game’s older visual language. The change may make them look less technically impressive, but it should help them belong in the world around them.
