Ubisoft is ending Rainbow Six Mobile, its free-to-play tactical multiplayer shooter for Android and iOS, after less than a year of full global release. The shutdown adds another troubled mobile live-service project to the publisher’s recent record.

In a statement posted to the game’s X account on October 8, Ubisoft said it had made the difficult decision to sunset Rainbow Six Mobile. The game will remain playable until January 15, 2027, while its next season is scheduled to launch the following week.

The decision is notable for a project with such a long development path. Ubisoft announced Rainbow Six Mobile in 2022, followed by a beta that ran through 2023 and continued into 2024. The release was later delayed until 2025.

That year, the game launched in Latin America, one of the regions where the Rainbow Six series is particularly popular. A worldwide release followed on February 23, 2026, but the full launch did not translate into lasting engagement.

Although the game accumulated millions of downloads across Android and iOS, it reportedly struggled to remain part of players’ regular mobile gaming habits. A Google Play reviewer described it as solid while wishing it more closely matched the console and PC editions, including a larger operator roster and more control over team spawn locations instead of random selection.

The free-to-play structure also attracted criticism. Players objected to operators being placed behind paywalls and to the amount of grinding required to unlock content. For readers interested in the wider arcade and gaming news, the closure illustrates the risks of sustaining multiplayer games on mobile after launch.

Rainbow Six Mobile is not the only Ubisoft mobile experiment to encounter difficulties. The Division Resurgence has also struggled to make a strong impression. Ubisoft recently ported that looter shooter to PC, where it was criticised as buggy, repetitive and largely abandoned.

For players who prefer dedicated hardware over short-lived online services, RETROCADE’s arcade machines and bartop arcades offer a different kind of gaming setup. Those planning a home build can also explore the Arcade Machine Buying Guide before choosing a cabinet.
