The Housemaid is a 131-minute psychological thriller built around suspicion, desire and a succession of deliberately outrageous reversals. The film, directed by Bridesmaids filmmaker Paul Feig, is now streaming on HBO Max.

Adapted from Freida McFadden’s commercially successful novel, the film embraces the book’s pulpy domestic-thriller foundations while giving its central characters more room to develop. Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried lead a tense story that should appeal to viewers who enjoy twist-heavy films in the vein of Verity.

What is The Housemaid about?

Recently paroled Millie, played by Sweeney, is trying to rebuild her life and maintain lawful employment. She accepts a live-in housekeeping position with Nina, portrayed by Seyfried, who lives in an imposing mansion in Great Neck, Long Island.

Nina is pregnant and shares the house with her husband Andrew, played by Brandon Sklenar, and their daughter Cece, played by Indiana Elle. The property is lavish to the point of gaudiness, but the arrangement initially appears practical for everyone involved.

The situation soon becomes unsettling. Millie is assigned an attic bedroom that locks from the outside, while Nina warns her to keep away from Andrew. Suspicion develops into accusations and emotional breakdowns, leaving Millie feeling confined despite the mansion’s vast size.

The film keeps its central question deliberately unstable: is Nina genuinely troubled, or is someone concealing a larger scheme? As Millie becomes closer to Andrew, her attraction complicates the rumours surrounding the household and threatens to reshape everyone’s understanding of what is happening.

A pulpy thriller powered by its twists

The Housemaid is more solemn than its source novel, but that seriousness does not prevent it from delivering the heightened turns expected from this kind of thriller. A major reveal in the middle of the story changes the direction of the drama, giving Feig space to expose new sides of Nina’s inconsistent behaviour.

Before the truth comes into focus, the film uses several competing viewpoints to keep the audience uncertain. Nina’s high-society friends and other household staff describe her in alarming terms, while Andrew presents himself as a devoted husband and father mourning the change in his wife.

Millie’s growing feelings for Andrew make those conflicting accounts even harder to assess. The story also edges towards horror as the pressure inside the house intensifies, offering clues without immediately explaining how they fit together.

The adaptation builds towards a more restrained but still emphatic dramatic climax than the novel. Feig has told The Hollywood Reporter that the big-screen version needed to raise the stakes, and the film does so through perspective changes and a series of escalating revelations.

Seyfried’s performance is particularly effective for viewers willing to watch closely for small indications of what lies beneath Nina’s presentation. The film becomes sleazy when the material demands it, but avoids tipping fully into the broad camp associated with films such as Body Double (1984) and Wild Things (1998).

Is The Housemaid worth watching?

This is not a tightly controlled mystery in the tradition of Gone Girl, and its formula is often obvious. Nevertheless, the brisk pacing, claustrophobic atmosphere and performances make it an entertaining choice for audiences who enjoy erotic and psychological thrillers with a pulpy edge.
