Bloodaxe sets 20 January 2027 premiere on Prime Video
Michael Hirst, the creator of Vikings, is returning to the Norse world with Bloodaxe, a new historical action series arriving on Prime Video in Australia and elsewhere on 20 January 2027. The series will premiere on Prime Video.

The first season contains eight episodes, with every episode scheduled to release on the same day. A teaser trailer was shown during a New York Comic Con panel featuring Hirst, co-showrunner Horatio Hirst, and cast members Xavier Molyneux, Jessica Madsen and Levi Miller.

A battle for Norway’s throne
Set in 10th-century Norway, Bloodaxe follows Erik Bloodaxe, played by Molyneux, as he attempts to claim the Norwegian throne. His wife, Gunnhild, Mother of Kings, portrayed by Madsen, stands alongside him as their campaign brings them into conflict with rival rulers, changing alliances and brutal betrayals.
The struggle extends across Scandinavia and draws in a powerful English king. Like Hirst’s earlier work, the series combines documented history and Norse legend with political manoeuvring and violent battles.

Cast, production and season two
Hirst created the original Vikings, which ran for six seasons on Netflix from 2013 to 2020. He later worked as an executive producer on the sequel series Vikings: Valhalla.
Bloodaxe has already been renewed for a second season, now in production in Ireland. The wider cast includes Karlis Arnolds Avots, Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, Rune Temte and Jesper Christensen.
