Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave point of no return explained

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave has two important recruitment deadlines. The first is flexible because you can replay Act 1 chapters, while the second permanently closes off new recruitment at the beginning of Act 3.

This guide explains both cutoffs, including the earlier deadline affecting Theodora’s route, and what happens to characters who are not recruited in time.

When is the recruitment cutoff?

The first deadline arrives on November 27. Leda’s, Dietrich’s and Cai’s first parts conclude on that date, and you can recruit additional characters until you begin the final quest.

Theodora’s route ends earlier, on October 24. The quest descriptions continue to list November 27, but Theodora’s content is finished on 10/24, making that the effective deadline for her path.

What happens after the first deadline?

The November 27 cutoff is not permanent in the same way as the Act 3 lockout. Once you finish the act, you can replay any chapter within it as often as you like.

  • Replay chapters to recruit characters you missed.
  • Train characters using a different approach.
  • Complete paralogues that were previously skipped.

There is an important limitation. Changes made during an Act 1 replay only carry into later acts after you complete the remainder of Act 1 again. That can be time-consuming, so it may be better to recruit a missed character during a later route if you plan to play another path anyway.

The permanent point of no return: the start of Act 3

The irreversible cutoff occurs when you approach the Door of Destiny at the beginning of Act 3 and choose to pass through it. This applies whether you completed or skipped the War Arc.

Before you enter, the game shows which Flame Lords will accompany your avatar character. This is your final opportunity to recruit more Flame Lords or other characters by completing paralogues or finishing another character’s Act 1.

Dietrich, Theodora, Leda and Cai can join Act 3 through their respective paralogues, even if you do not complete their full acts. However, they appear as guest characters, so you cannot control their classes or inventory. Any other character not recruited before Act 3 will not appear there.

Can you recruit characters after entering Act 3?

No. Although you can leave Act 3 and merge character data from different routes, this feature does not allow you to recruit new characters.

Merging only applies when you recruited the same character on multiple paths. You can then spend Karma Shards, the same currency used for Boons of Salvation, to combine their statistics and create a stronger version of that character.

Quick checklist before entering Act 3

  1. Recruit any remaining characters before approaching the Door of Destiny.
  2. Complete relevant paralogues if you want Dietrich, Theodora, Leda or Cai available as guests.
  3. Remember that Theodora’s route ends on October 24, despite the quest text showing November 27.
  4. Do not rely on Act 3 merging to add characters you never recruited.

Fortune’s Weave is a large campaign with multiple routes. Early progress is a good time to recruit characters, unlock Boons of Salvation and use free time effectively, including visiting the Perch for a Bird Time session.
