Sony is extending AI-powered image upscaling beyond the PlayStation 5 Pro. Base PS5 owners will begin receiving the technology in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei, with both games supporting it from today.
What is QSSR?
The tech is called Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR. It follows PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which first launched on PS5 Pro.
Sony describes QSSR as a new performance tier of AI upscaling developed through its work with AMD under Project Amethyst. The base PS5 version uses a streamlined neural-network design and a manually tuned implementation intended to make the most of the console’s available performance.
In practical terms, the goal is sharper fine detail and steadier image quality without requiring a PS5 Pro. It is another example of how software techniques can improve the visual output of existing hardware, much like careful display and monitor choices matter in an arcade build.
How the improvements look in each game
Marvel’s Wolverine
A comparison of a distant city backdrop shows the difference in Marvel’s Wolverine. Buildings in the background appear clearer and less smeared when QSSR is enabled.
Insomniac Games head of technology Mike Fitzgerald said the technique adds pixel-level clarity and stability to the game’s environments. That includes the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku and other locations across Logan’s journey.
Ghost of Yotei
The Ghost of Yotei comparison focuses on reeds beside a pond. The QSSR image presents more visible detail, although the difference may be harder to identify during ordinary play than in a deliberately enlarged comparison.
Jasmin Patry, lead rendering engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, said the studio had wanted all PS5 players to experience the image quality associated with PSSR on PS5 Pro. She described QSSR as a positive move towards that objective.
Developers can now use the technology
QSSR is available in both games on PS5 today, and Sony is making the technology available to every developer on the platform. Its wider impact will depend on how many studios choose to implement it in future releases.
