Critical Role has revealed that its performers receive additional pay after a player character dies, helping protect the choices and risks that make a long-running tabletop campaign compelling.

What began 11 years ago as a Dungeons & Dragons livestream on Geek & Sundry has developed into a broad entertainment business. The company now produces animated adaptations, novels, spin-off books and tabletop games through its publishing arm, Darrington Press.

Behind the fantasy adventure is a working production with eight co-founders, guest performers and semi-regular cast members. Character survival is never guaranteed, particularly during Campaign 4, where Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has taken a notably unforgiving approach. Campaigns can also vary in episode length, creating an obvious question about how cast contracts account for sudden character exits.

A recent episode of Tale Gate, the show’s live talk programme, offered the clearest answer so far. During its Night Cap segment, which first aired in late August, creative director and co-founder Marisha Ray discussed the company’s approach to compensation when a character is killed.

What is Critical Role’s kill fee?

Ray said the cast contracts contain what the company calls “kill fees”. The provision means a performer continues to be paid for several episodes after their character dies, rather than immediately losing income when the story takes an unexpected turn.

“We didn’t want people to feel like they didn’t want to take risks in fear of dying,” Ray said.

Travis Willingham and Sam Riegel jokingly described the arrangement as a “death benefit”, but Ray explained that it addresses a genuine production concern. Without that protection, players might hesitate before making dangerous decisions, potentially changing the way they approach the game.

The precise payment structure has not been confirmed. It is unclear whether performers are paid per episode, although the comments suggest that possibility, or whether another arrangement applies across a campaign. With a large and changing cast, episode-based compensation would be a logical explanation, but the available details do not establish the terms.

That distinction matters in a campaign built around consequences. If a performer feared losing their income immediately after a character’s death, they could be less willing to accept risks or pursue dramatic choices. The kill-fee provision is designed to separate a character’s fate from the player’s short-term financial security.

For viewers and tabletop fans, the disclosure provides an unusual look at the business mechanics behind a major actual-play production. It also compares favourably with conventional television arrangements, where an actor may simply stop being paid when their character is written out.

The company has previously shared other production details, including that most episodes are filmed close together. For more tabletop and gaming coverage, visit the RETROCADE Arcade Blog, or browse the Critical Role reference page.

Why the policy matters to the game

Character death is part of the tension in Dungeons & Dragons, but it can become complicated when the game is also a professional production. A contractual buffer allows players to respond to the story rather than treating every risky decision as a potential threat to their livelihood.

It is a useful reminder that an actual-play series combines improvisation, performance and production planning. The audience sees the dice rolls and narrative consequences, while contracts help ensure those consequences can remain meaningful for everyone at the table.
