Spoiler warning: This guide covers the complete quest, its boss fight, dialogue choices and possible endings.
In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the next-generation update added “In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow”, a quest set beneath The Devil’s Pit in Velen. Geralt helps an Eternal Fire deacon investigate the abandoned mine, confronts the Red Miasmal and can earn the Forgotten Wolf School gear diagrams.
The reward includes every Forgotten Wolven armour and weapon diagram. You must then complete the “Scavenger Hunt: Forgotten Wolf School Gear Diagrams” treasure hunt before crafting the set. For more gaming and arcade coverage, visit the RETROCADE Arcade Blog.

How to begin In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow
Travel to The Devil’s Pit, in central Velen. It lies south of Novigrad and south-west of Oxenfurt. Speak with the Eternal Fire deacon at the entrance and agree to assist him.

Enter the mine and defeat the deserters inside. Continue downwards, then take the north-west exit into the caves. Look for the double doors marked with unusual white symbols.

Search The Devil’s Pit for clues and loot
Collect anything useful before completing the quest. The cave loot becomes inaccessible once the mission ends.
Investigation is optional, but it is worthwhile. Search the corpses and Witcher symbols, and locate the five notes written by Reinald. If Keira Metz’s quests are complete, her magic lamp can reveal ghosts in some areas.
Thorough exploration unlocks extra dialogue and reveals a potion recipe that can make the coming boss encounter easier. When the mysterious voice tells you not to enter an area, do the opposite. At the fork where it directs you right, take the left-hand path to uncover more information.

How to craft Reinald’s Philter
At the alchemy station, read the priest’s testament. In the large room filled with ghosts of plague victims, search the reddish shack for the recipe and ingredients needed for Reinald’s Philter.

After finding enough evidence, two optional objectives appear. Read the Red Miasmal entry in Geralt’s bestiary, then open the alchemy menu and select the Quests category to craft Reinald’s Philter.
How to free Reinald
At the end of the mine, a figure claiming to be Reinald is trapped in a stone prison. Use the Aard sign to break him free.
The figure really is Reinald, but the Red Miasmal has possessed him. Prepare for the encounter with these options:
- Apply specter oil to your weapon.
- Use Yrden to trap the specter, then cast Aard to drive it from Reinald.
- Drink Reinald’s Philter yourself.
When the possessed figure asks for the potion, do not hand it over. Geralt should consume it instead, as giving it to Reinald makes the battle more difficult.

Phase one: Possessed Reinald
Possessed Reinald regularly raises a Quen shield. Wait until the protection drops before attacking, rather than wasting stamina against it. Yrden followed by Aard is the most direct way to expel the Red Miasmal from his body.

Phase two: the Red Miasmal
The Red Miasmal then fights in its non-human form. It can teleport, summon minions and launch a powerful ranged attack. Keep moving and be ready to dodge whenever it disappears and reappears around the arena.
In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow endings
After the battle, Reinald asks Geralt to bring the deacon to him. Your response determines whether the priest reaches the arena.

- “Fine, I’ll get the priest.” Geralt brings the priest to Reinald, after which further dialogue decides the outcome.
- “No. Not worth the risk.” Geralt refuses, Reinald relents and Geralt burns the body. The priest never meets Reinald.
If you leave the priest outside, you can explain what happened or say that the details do not matter. This choice has little effect: the priest does not believe Geralt, even when told about the Eternal Fire cult’s crimes.
If you take the priest to Reinald, there are two possible results. In the better outcome, the priest survives, abandons the Eternal Fire and establishes a hospital in The Devil’s Pit. Reinald’s ghost finds peace. In the darker outcome, Reinald kills the priest, remains troubled and leaves the mine haunted by ghouls.

Dialogue choices for the better outcome
Support the priest during the conversation. Two positive remarks should be enough, although selecting additional favourable lines is safer:
- “Boy’s innocent”
- “Don’t need a church to do good, priest.”
- “Found a priest who sacrificed his life”, if available
- “What would you do, Reinald?”, if available
Dialogue choices for the darker outcome
Criticise the priest by selecting “Reinald’s right” and “Crimes like these can’t be forgiven”. These choices guarantee that the priest is murdered.
Regardless of the ending, completing the quest awards all Forgotten Wolven armour and weapon diagrams. Finish the related treasure hunt to obtain the complete set.
