Avengers: Secret Wars may face another scheduling challenge, with reports claiming principal photography has moved from October 2026 to January 2027. Disney has not confirmed the change.
Several established Marvel insiders have reported the alleged delay. Daniel Richtman first indicated that filming had shifted to November before reporting a further move to January. Alex P. and Apocalyptic Horseman subsequently supported the January timeframe.
The sequel was initially expected to begin production in mid-2026. That plan changed first to August and then to a later point in the year. Avengers: Secret Wars is currently scheduled for 17 December 2027, approximately 12 months after Avengers: Doomsday arrives on 18 December 2026.
A January start would not automatically force a theatrical delay, but the film’s likely scale creates a tight post-production window. Avengers: Doomsday reportedly filmed from April to September 2025, finishing around 15 months before its release. If Secret Wars required a similarly lengthy shoot, production beginning in January 2027 could conclude around June, leaving roughly six months for visual effects, editing and other finishing work.
Can Secret Wars still meet its planned release?
Marvel has completed major productions within a year of release before. Spider-Man: Brand New Day filmed from August to December 2025, around seven months before its planned 27 July 2026 debut. The Fantastic Four: First Steps followed a comparable production schedule.
Those examples show that a compressed timetable is possible, although the expected scope of Secret Wars could make the schedule more demanding. Disney may also be keen to avoid another postponement. Both upcoming Avengers films have already moved from their earlier dates: Doomsday shifted from 1 May 2026 to December 2026, while Secret Wars moved from 27 May 2027 to December 2027.

Why might Marvel be delaying production?
One possibility is that Disney wants to assess audience and box-office reactions to Avengers: Doomsday before committing fully to its sequel. The two films appear to have been developed less traditionally than Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
The Russo brothers began directing Doomsday with an incomplete script. They have said their experience running Community taught them to work responsively with performers, but an unfinished script can still create production uncertainty.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day reportedly performed exceptionally well at the box office, yet the future direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe may still depend heavily on the performance of the next two Avengers films. Waiting for more information before starting a large and effects-heavy sequel could therefore be a strategic decision.

At present, the January 2027 filming date remains an unconfirmed report rather than an official production announcement. The planned 17 December 2027 release is still possible, but every month of delay reduces the time available for a project expected to require extensive visual-effects work.
