Critical Role’s fourth campaign takes a major step away from the familiar. Instead of returning to Exandria, the cast is exploring Aramán, a fractured, god-forsaken realm where magic behaves differently and danger can appear without warning.

The campaign’s structure is just as unusual as its setting. Using a West Marches format, the players are divided between three groups: Soldiers, Seekers and Schemers. Each table follows different characters and storylines, meaning the cast does not always know what has happened elsewhere or how those events may affect their own characters.

That approach creates a very different kind of tabletop role-playing experience. Like a well-designed arcade gaming story, it depends on separate threads gradually revealing a larger picture, but here the performers are discovering that picture at the same time as the audience.

Why Campaign 4 is such a demanding experiment

During the latest episode of Tale Gate, a talk show available through Critical Role’s Beacon streaming platform, cast member and co-founder Liam O’Brien discussed the unusual challenge. He was answering a question about the Convergence arc, which covers episodes 26 to 31.

“This is uncharted territory, what we’re doing in Campaign 4,” O’Brien said. He explained that he once knew every part of each chapter, whereas now there are substantial sections of the story he knows nothing about.

O’Brien offered a small but revealing example. He was unaware that Murray Mag’nesson, played by Marisha Ray, and Kattigan Vale, played by Robbie Daymond, had become romantically involved until host Whitney Moore mentioned it on Tale Gate.

That surprise is not simply a by-product of a busy production schedule. In the first three campaigns, a cast member might miss an important moment because of illness, filming commitments or an event. Campaign 4 makes that separation part of the design: different groups pursue different quests before eventually reconnecting and comparing what they have learned.

Separate tables create meaningful consequences

Viewers saw the information gap clearly when the three groups reunited for “Council of Heroes”, the opening episode of the Convergence arc. The Soldiers and Seekers players encountered the fake resurrection of Yanessa Halovar as new information. The real purpose of Occtis Tachonis’s death was also unknown to both the Soldiers and Schemers.

The cast has acknowledged that they can discuss the campaign away from the table. However, discussing events afterwards is not the same as experiencing them in the moment. The format preserves uncertainty even when the performers share a broader connection to the production.

It also allows decisions to develop without input from players who may have different information or concerns. For instance, if Matthew Mercer’s Julian Davinos had been present with Luis Carazo’s Azune Nayar during the conversation with Harondus Einfasen about Azune’s axe, Mercer might have unintentionally influenced how Julian behaved.

This separation removes a familiar source of hesitation. Players cannot pause to account for every unseen storyline because they do not know what those storylines contain. The result is a campaign that moves forward through immediate choices rather than prolonged group deliberation.

Uncertainty makes every choice feel larger

The West Marches structure is a demanding change for the cast, but it also gives Campaign 4 a distinctive energy. Decisions are made with incomplete information, and consequences can arrive before everyone understands the events that caused them.

That makes the campaign especially compelling. The audience does not know what is coming, while the cast often has only slightly more information. Each revelation can therefore reshape the story for both the characters and the players.
