Lanterns reaches the end of its first season this weekend, with only eight episodes making up its opening run. What initially looked like a promising comic-book adaptation with an impressive cast has become something much more compelling: one of the strongest shows HBO has produced in some time, and arguably the best comic-book series currently on television.

That makes the approaching finale especially difficult to face. The series has built enough mystery and momentum to leave its audience speculating between episodes, much like the theories and reveals that keep a great arcade news story moving from one surprise to the next.

What could happen in episode eight?

The final episode could resolve the season in several radically different ways. Is Hal Jordan actually dead? Will Sinestro embrace the Yellow Lantern path? Could John Stewart finally access his powers while confronting the trauma of his childhood? There is even the possibility that a substantial part of the finale will unfold through flashbacks.

After the way each instalment has overturned the theories raised by the previous one, predicting the conclusion feels almost impossible. The certainty is that viewers will be watching closely—and that the end credits may leave a sizeable emotional hole behind.

“Don’t be afraid — to be afraid.”

HBO Max is promoting the season finale for Sunday at 9pm. Follow #Lanterns for updates, or view the official preview post from HBO Max, published on October 1, 2026.

Will Lanterns return for season 2?

HBO has not confirmed a second season. The opening story has largely worked as a self-contained narrative, but it has also left plenty of threads available for future episodes. A major cliffhanger could add even more uncertainty, especially if the finale creates more questions than answers.

The show is also attracting millions of viewers at a time when launching a successful new television series is increasingly difficult. That audience gives HBO a strong reason to continue, although a renewal remains unannounced.

There are already rumors flying about a writers’ room for season two. DCU boss James Gunn, meanwhile, has been very coy about the distinction between a “season” finale and a “series” finale on social media. A renewal announcement immediately after Sunday’s episode would not be surprising, but it has not happened yet.

The wait could be a long one

Even if Lanterns receives a second season, new episodes would not arrive soon. That would leave viewers without one of the funniest, most generous and most distinctive prestige genre shows currently on television.

There is always the wider world of Green Lantern comics to explore in the meantime. The return of Slow Horses on Apple also offers another strong series to follow, although neither option is likely to completely replace what Lanterns has provided. For readers who enjoy the craft and spectacle of interactive entertainment, RETROCADE’s arcade videos and arcade machine buying guide offer a different kind of distraction while the future of the series remains uncertain.
