Avengers: Endgame Encore has left some cinema-goers angry after they discovered that one of its four new scenes was reserved for IMAX and Infinity Vision-certified screenings. The re-release revisits the 2019 battle with Thanos while adding material designed to build interest in Avengers: Doomsday, due in December.
Viewers attending standard 2D sessions still saw most of the additional footage, but not the complete version promoted through premium-format screenings. The distinction reportedly came as a surprise to some families and fans who had not read the fine print before buying tickets.
“I just got back from a regular showing of Endgame Encore (2D screening) and I’m really frustrated that I didn’t get to see all the new footage,” Reddit user Tyler_the_hourman wrote. The viewer said neither they nor others in the session realised that the standard cut would omit part of the new material.
The same viewer acknowledged that choosing a regular session technically meant receiving the version purchased, but argued that the limitation was not made clear enough. The complaint was also highlighted by IGN.
Four new scenes, with one kept for premium screens
The Encore edition adds four pieces of footage:
- Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter together.
- Bruce Banner meeting Doctor Doom.
- A short sequence showing the Doom mask being forged.
- A Time Variance Authority scene featuring cameos from the Loki television series.
It is the TVA sequence that was restricted to IMAX and Infinity Vision screenings. Infinity Vision is Disney’s premium-screen format, positioned as a rival to IMAX as the company seeks to compete with Dune 3 later this year.
Audience frustration over the ticket distinction
Another viewer in the discussion said they had taken their family, including an 11-year-old, to a regular showing without knowing that extra footage would be withheld. They described the decision to place new scenes behind a premium-format ticket as surprising, particularly because Endgame is a seven-year-old film and the material is intended to generate excitement for Avengers: Doomsday.
For that audience member, the arrangement did the opposite. Their cinema visit was planned around a convenient session rather than an Infinity Vision screening, leaving them feeling that the film had been presented as incomplete.
Was the premium footage disclosed?
Disney’s 25 August press release did contain a disclosure. It stated that “an additional sneak peek at the film” would be available to people seeing Avengers: Endgame Encore on IMAX and Infinity Vision-certified screens, as explained in the announcement.
However, fans who avoid detailed Marvel coverage to steer clear of spoilers may not have encountered that wording. The complaints also reflect a broader issue: an extra scene that functions partly as a promotional bridge to the next film can feel less like a bonus and more like content withheld from ordinary ticket holders.
