The Housemaid arrives on HBO Max in October
Sydney Sweeney’s 2025 erotic thriller The Housemaid has an official streaming date. The film will begin streaming on HBO Max on 9 October, giving Australian viewers a chance to watch the adaptation at home.

The release is part of a busy October for fans of steamy thrillers. Michael Showalter’s adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s Verity, starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, is scheduled to open in cinemas on 2 October, while The Housemaid moves to streaming.
Directed by Paul Feig, whose credits include Bridesmaids and Ghostbusters, The Housemaid was written by Rebecca Sonnenshine, known for her work on The Boys. The film is based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 New York Times bestselling novel.

What is The Housemaid about?
Millie Calloway, played by Sydney Sweeney, has spent 10 years in prison and needs employment to satisfy the conditions of her parole. She accepts a live-in housekeeping position at a Long Island mansion, where she works for Andrew, his pregnant wife Nina and their daughter Cece.
The household becomes increasingly unstable as Millie and Nina discover more about one another. Nina is suspicious of the amount of time Millie spends with her husband, while Millie becomes uneasy around Nina’s violent mood swings. Brandon Sklenar plays Andrew, Amanda Seyfried plays Nina and Indiana Elle plays Cece.

A successful theatrical run and home release
Released in December 2025, The Housemaid earned largely positive reviews and became a major commercial success. It grossed $400 million worldwide from a reported $35 million budget.
The film first reached video on demand on 3 February before receiving a physical release on 17 March. Its HBO Max debut now provides another way to catch up with Millie’s story before the planned follow-up.

The Housemaid’s sequel is in development
Freida McFadden expanded the story with two follow-up novels: The Housemaid’s Secret and The Housemaid Is Watching. In January, Lionsgate announced that Feig, Sonnenshine and Sweeney would return for a film adaptation of The Housemaid’s Secret.
The sequel will place Millie in another house, where she helps a woman dealing with an abusive husband. Watching the first film before its 9 October HBO Max release will set up that next chapter.
